Hack My Vanilmandelate!

Just got an organic acids panel done, but I won't be able to speak with my practitioner about it for a while. I don't want to jump to any conclusions before I talk with him, but in the meantime I wonder what to make of it.

It seems like many of my results are near the high or low ends of the ranges. Only a few were out of range, those being:

??-Hydroxybutyrate was very high, which the results said indicates ketosis. No surprise there. I've been eating VLC consistently lately, albeit somewhat unintentionally. I'm doing a GAPS thing and avoiding starches, but not eating any fruit or sweeteners either.

a-Ketoisocaproate was high, which apparently indicates impaired Leucine metabolism. First I've heard of that, although I think I have some amino acid issues, generally.

Formiminoglutamate was high, indicating Tetrahydrofolate insufficiency. I went and bought some tetrahydrofolate, but I'm unsure about whether I should really take it. I've heard so much about the dangers of excess folic acid, and I'm not sure if that means excess folate, too.

And finally:

Vanilmandelate was low, indicating Epi- & Norepinephrine turnover inhibition.

For the last result, the lab recommends Phenylalanine and Tyrosine supplementation, which brings up a weird paradox for me. I've had a naturopath in the past recommend that I take tyrosine, but I suffered some anxiety attacks while taking it. More recently, I think I've discovered that I'm sensitive to tyramine and histamine. Which accumulate if the various amino acid pathways aren't functioning well. I'm not about to start taking tyrosine again, but I don't know how else to address this issue.

My main issue is 10+ years of acne, which have greatly subsided since going paleo. Still there, though. Food sensitivities have gotten worse in recent years, along with anxiety. Healing the gut GAPS style is my plan. If only that damn book would arrive in the mail already!

Anyway, I'm in this over my head, and I can't find much info about these acids online. So if you know something about them, I (and whoever ends up googling them next) would like to hear about it.

Thanks for the answer. No I hadn't seen that document! I'd looked on the Metametrix site but didnt' find it. It's very helpful, thanks! I'm mystified by some of the weird connections here. I seem to be sensitive to histamine and tyramine, and yet several of my abnormal results are the result of LOW tyrosine and histidine (from which those amines are derived). Weird.

I am going to assume that you had the Metametrix study done. I just did it a few weeks ago, main problem bad gut flora. Did you see their interpretive guide on line? Including link here: http://www.metametrix.com/files/test-menu/interpretive-guides/Organix-IG.pdf. Scroll down past the tables. Hope this helps and good luck!
