Why don't you use Hemp Oil?

Many paleos use olive oil sparingly (cold, not for cooking) on salads etc., but I never see any referrences to hemp oil. Phytic acid is not an issue with hemp oil and it's O6 to 03 ratio is 3:1. If you are willing to throw olive oil on a salad why not use hemp oil as it appears to be nutritionally superior?

Yeah, hemp seed goes rancid pretty quickly. I don't use hemp unless it's fresh ground, which is impossible in the US. Also, it's not just ratio that matters, but total amt.

@Drew, I was surprised to learn that hempseed oil is not particularly expensive. It's available for ~58 cents per ounce on amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GAO91K/ref=s9_simh_gw_p325_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1S7A85ADDJPTKB8NNNRX&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846 ), comparable to many olive oils.

It's not just the ratio of O6:O3 that's important, it's the absolute amount of O6. Hemp oil contains 43 to 62 grams of linoleic acid (O6) per 100 gms ( http://hempworld.com/hempworldhotels_com/htms/Health/Hempforhealth.html ), while olive oil contains only 9.21 grams of linoleic acid per 100 gms. ( http://www.thepaleodiet.com/nutritional_tools/oils_table.html ). So hemp oil contains about 5X as much O6 PUFA as olive oil, making your claim of it being "nutritionally superior" dubious. Still, if it's used sparingly, probably no big deal.

As to taste, I haven't yet tried hemp oil, so I don't know if it tastes better than EVOO.

By the way, it's a common myth that consuming hemp food products will cause a positive THC drug test, but this is unlikely ( http://www.naihc.org/hemp_information/content/THC_emp_drug_testing.html ).

Hempseed oil has a relatively large amount of omega 6 in it compared to olive oil (55% vs 21% max in olive oil), so it would be good to avoid when trying to reduce omega-6 consumption. Also, olive oil is much more widely available, cheaper, and many people like the taste.

You know what else has a good omega 3/6 ration? 1 gallon or rancid soybean oil mixed with 1 gallon of rancid fish oil. Yum

I hate it when a conversation slides downhill into a pile of useless sarcasm so soon after it's begun. I've started to compare the benefits of hemp seed oil to the benefits of olive oil and was happy to find this question in the forum. The useful answers have given me a starting point to further investigation, and I thank the people who posted the comments. The sarcasm just makes me shake my head and wonder why some people even bother.
