Backyard coconuts

Greetings from California, where even low-fat dieters' palm trees are reproducing with an evolutionary fervor. Are they edible? The coconuts, I mean, not the people. (But even if cannibalism were acceptable, I'd rather not eat a grain-fed human.) I cut a coconut open, and it seems pretty similar to the ones in the store aside from the fact that the ones from home are a little smaller. Does size matter?

Little guide on coconut harvesting: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/492/ and a guide to other palm fruits, in case there are any around you: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/3242/. Just don't take any off private land without permission!
