Is palm oil trying to kill me?

There have been some studies released that suggest that tocotrienols inhibit the HMG-COA Reductase mevalonate pathway. Statin drugs have been identified as having the same effect in that, they may both evidently inhibit the production of COQ10. COQ10 has been extensively studied to be an inportant element in heart health. Now i'm not a biochemist, i'm just joining the dots here. But if both crude palm oil and statins inhibit HMG-COA Reductase and ultimately reduce COQ10. Doesn't that therefore make palm oil death in a jar? Can someone please chime in with a bit more knowledge and prove me wrong. I just wanted cooking oil, not devils blood!

Red palm oil also has coq10 in it, so it may not be that big a deal.

I'd argue the benefits of tocotriene vitamin E probably outweighs inhibition towards HMG-CoA reductase. Balance is key, whenever you reduce variety in diet, you're going to run into issues like this.

Unless you're using virgin red palm oil (which isn't great for general cooking), you're probably not getting a ton of tocotrienes from more refined palm oils. I treat red palm oil almost as a supplement, I eat it for the vitamin E content a few times a week.

The positive effects of tocotrienols on cholesterol levels result from their ability to down-regulate a liver enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis (HMG-CoA reductase). This down-regulation results in a suppression of the activity of the enzyme. Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs also work by affecting the same enzyme, but in a totally different way. Statins don’t down-regulate the enzyme; rather they deplete substrates of the enzyme itself. These substrates are substances that enzymes act upon to produce several substances in the body, including cholesterol. However, besides producing cholesterol, these same substrates are also used by the body to produce beneficial things such as Coenzyme Q10. Because tocotrienols achieve enzyme inhibition through a different mechanism than cholesterol lowering statin drugs, they don’t reduce our bodies Coenzyme Q10 levels like statin drugs sometimes can do.
