So, my wife is now on board with Paleo!! However she is currently breastfeeding our 4wk old. She is still taking her PreNatal vitamins. And was wondering how adding Fish Oil to her diet would effect the breast feeding / Baby. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No problem at all! My midwife highly recommended that I continued this fish oil. I also took it in my last trimester. It passes through the milk which means the baby is getting all those great Omegas :) Just make sure you are using a high quality oil.

She should work with her OB/midwife to figure out a starting dosage, especially if she is still bleeding because high doses can be a blood thinner. Also starting on a high dose can cause serotonin syndrome and exacerbate any postpartum mood disorders that could be present.

But fish oil or oily fish is great to replenish both mom's brain, and to help the little one grow a big beautiful brain, just ease into it.

You also seem a little concerned about the baby maybe not liking the taste of it in the milk, I've never run into that problem.

I recommend Neptune Krill oil as a good Omega 3 source that is mercury-free to the pregnant and nursing moms I work with. Iherb & Amazon have good prices.

I'd just source your fish oil supplements and ensure they are tested for levels of mercury! They should say they are Free from: Detectable levels of mercury, cadmium, lead, pcb's, contaminants and preservatives.

Happy feeding :)

I used a prenatal DHA that claims to support lactation as well, so I assume it's good to take while breastfeeding: it was from Nordic Naturals.
