source for clean offal in Honolulu

Anyone in Honolulu have leads on grass-fed liver and heart for instance? Whole Foods said they never get it, and my butcher (Aala meat market) seemed bothered by the question. Thanks for any tips.

Thanks! That's disappointing if the Maui Cattle meat is grain-finished; I looked on their website which did not clarify. Also attempted to email back in August but didn't get a response back...I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it is grain-finished.

For what it's worth, there is no shortage of quality GF beef on the Big island. You might be able to get a whole cow shipped over. Sorry, no help on sources for other meats.

-Kokua Market- true grass-fed beef from Big Island (Kulana brand), various frozen cuts and ground; my first choice. -Aala Meat Market- old school butcher, grass-fed from Molokai, the real deal, fresh but limited selection. You will feel good supporting these guys. -KCC farmers market (saturdays)-- North Shore Cattle Company(I think) sells grass-fed ground beef, and another vendor is marketing "hawaiian red veal". - Kualoa Ranch- have not tried their beef and have been told by others that it is grain-finished ON THE MAINLAND. If this is true I would not buy it; worth looking into though.

Here's what i have learned over the last 6 months of hunting for good beef: -Whole Foods has various cuts of Maui "grass fed" beef, but a butcher in town that I trust has told me the Maui animals get grain-finished. And you have to pay the "smug tax." Also, Foodland's butcher told me that because of drought, the Maui Cattle people have been having trouble filling orders, and WF gets dibs apparently. If I had a choice I would buy Maui cattle products from Foodland rather that Whole Foods...

Danielle: Whole Foods has whole pasture-raised chickens (including offal), although they're not local.

Thanks for the tip on Kualoa Ranch, I didn't know they were selling beef. Aala Meat Market is in town, on Waiakamilo Rd in Kalihi. They carry grassfed beef from Molokai and are a nice old-school butcher with a small retail counter. Not sure if they have local pastured chicken, that may be hard to find, but if you ask they may be able to find it. They told me they could get local pork and lamb from time to time.

Btw, where is Aala market? Is it organic/clean? And have you found any sources for pasture-raised chickens? I have a hard time finding any!

Contact Gary and Luann Gunder from Tin Roof Ranch for pasture raised chickens. They're located at the North Shore and sell broilers and eggs. For grass-fed beef, I go through Ken. He gets his beef directly from Maui and Molokai. He sells offal (liver, tongue, etc.). I get all my beef bones from him. He's usually at the North Shore Farmers market on Sundays with Gary and Luann. Check him out there.

Don't want to make another question thread so I'm making this answer a question (yah, u like that).

What vendors on Oahu carry grassfed and/or local meat and what types of cuts?

Off the top of my head there's: Whole Foods (GF & Local, ground beef and various cuts from round to ribeye, $7+/lb) Foodland (That new one in Niu Valley-ish, GF, unsure about local, only ground beef $6-7/lb) Aala Meat Market (Not sure never been) Kualoa Ranch (Not Sure) Safeway (GF, not local, ground beef and buffalo, $9+...)

Any others?

I just got some grass-fed ground beef at Kualoa Ranch last weekend ($3.99/lb, take that whole foods and your $7 prices). I'd ask them of they have any offal you can buy. Pretty sure you can buy a cow there too.

Aloha friends, I came across this article and wanted to reply- although I know this thread is old! We buy all our 100% Grass Fed/Finished beef from VJs Butcher Block. All their beef comes only from Molokai and never includes any added hormones or antibiotics. Only Grass Fed and Grass Finished. Their cows are pasture raised and are humanely slaughtered. They have a Facebook with all their info and ordering process. We pick ours up at the Haleiwa Farmers Market. I know they deliver all over the Oahu, though. Theor prices is really affordable too. Same as conventional beef sold at Foodland or Costco. Check them out... VJs Butcher Block [email protected] Mahalo!

Try join Slow Food Oahu, they put together whole cow orders from Molokai several times a year, depending on demand.

You guys are missin out!! Gotta hit up the KCC Farmers Market. They had grass fed veal this weekend - probably in prep for Christmas - including grass fed veal liver. I think they wanted like 6.50 a pound for the liver. I would have to think that Kualoa Ranch would have organ meat. They do butcher cows their after all. Also, Kualoa Ranch sells their own sausage and ground beef at the KCC Farmers Market as well and its an awesome place to pick up all your local produce - especially fresh herbs - for half what any store charges.
