Have you read literature on how paleo diets can effect uncoupling proteins and alter energy metabolism and dynamics?

This relates to the family of UCP (six total as of today) but specifically UCP 2 and 3 effect paleo diets and energy partioning.

The human body has everything to gain from being a dietary opportunist...millions of years of evolution have allowed us to follow alternative metabolic pathways with delightful efficiency. Funny how we live in a world nowadays where inefficiency is desirable. In a world of excess we want to be biologically wasteful.

How would uncoupling help Phelps win medals? Does he need to loose weight? Why would he want to downgrade his metabolic efficiency?

Do you mean separately from the effect of ketosis?

That would be bonus N.E.A.T. calories.

Maybe you burn the calories because your body has to process extra water and you are also running back and forth to the bathroom all day! ;-)

40 calories? man you could lose a pound in 4 months with that awesome burn!... unless the extra burn induced a slightly higher appetite as well. then youd just balance out. I just dont think cold water is enough of a system shock to make a variance.

How did Phelps use UCP 1? I thought signficant levels of brown adipose were only in babies?

that is specifically done by UCP 1 not 2 or 3. Sherpa's are perfect examples of what can happen with UCP 1 activation......they have to eat pure butter to keep their weight up during their last thousand foot ascent on Everest. Phelps used it to win his 8 gold medals too and Lance used it to win his Tour De France over and over again. NASA has been using it for 15 yrs now.

Are we talking diet only or are you working in your cold bath stuff?

"... Lance used it to win his Tour De France over and over again."

What else did Lance use?

Hi Dr. K,

I second Kamal's response that while uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis theoretically makes energy metabolism horrendously inefficient, in reality the degree of uncoupling is negligible enough to be a fly on an elephant.

I talked to the local energy lab professor about uncoupling a couple days ago. She says it is not so variable depending on diet.

Thus, outside of dinitrophenol and icy dips, she made it sound like energy metabolism and/or nutrient partitioning would not be effected much by the composition of your diet.

Several participants in Lyle McDonald's forum used DNP for weight loss, and came out totally ripped within just a few weeks. Of course, they were very careful, and this method is recommended for absolutely no one!

EDIT: Two things that I've tried to quantify for heat production are drinking ice cold water and setting the thermostat low. Drinking cold water is much less onerous and produces something like a 40 kcal weight loss per day per eight glasses of cold water, if I recall correctly.
