Beyond infectobesity: how do viruses affect our long-term health?

I'm intrigued by viruses. Does a healthy, perhaps paleo, lifestyle improve our chances of beating infection?

Recently, clinicians and researchers discovered links between

  • HPV and cervical (and other) cancers:

Human papillomavirus is a necessary cause of invasive cervical cancer worldwide

  • Viruses and insulin signaling:

Adenovirus infection results in alterations of insulin signaling and glucose homeostasis

  • And viruses and Hashimoto's/Hypothyroidism via Ras-oncogene mutation:

Parvovirus B19 infection in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, papillary thyroid carcinoma, and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma

Others say we can't definitively blame viruses for things like chronic fatigue syndrome:

Retrovirus No Longer Thought to Be Cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

What do you guys think? Should this be a concern in our journey towards health and longevity? Do paleo recommendations (ample vitamin D, stress reduction, sleep, nutrition) cover this the best we know how?

Here's another in which scientists used a virus to knock down the dopamine receptors in rats addicted to junk food. http://www.scripps.edu/news/press/20100329.html

Not an answer to your question, but I got this article sent to me today about using viruses as a therapy for cancer. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/233669.php

I'm not against the study or learning itself, and sure everything we can learn and add to our knowledge base is beneficial. I've seen a lot of people get quite paranoid when studying microorganisms though :). As a health view I just tend to subscribe to the "its not the seed its the soil" point of view.

Yes, good point - plus, stressing would not be good for immunity. Though, I do think it could be relevant in the future for preventative medicine.

Don't stress on viruses. Paleo recommendations do indeed cover this the best. Eat well, stay active and structurally sound, and address your mental state. I personally believe disease does not manifest in healthy tissue. Which is to say our bodies have all they need to be healthy and function well if given the right lifestyle choices. Our knowledge base of how we treat or relate to viruses is very much in its infancy and in many ways extremely flawed at this very point and time (IMHO).

Absolutely we should be thinking about viruses. I'd highly recommend that everybody read Carl Zimmer's "A Planet of Viruses". It's a very short and easy read - just 109 pages - of various articles he's written over the years about viruses and their effects on humans. I can't recommend it enough (or frankly anything the man writes... read "Parasite Rex" if you want your mind absolutely blown to shreds).

[edit]: I will say though that because we still know so so little, it's hard to actually come up with any actionable items on the individual scale. But as a whole it's definitely not a topic to ignore.
