Stop my nut cravings!!!

Answered on August 19, 2014

I kept binging on nuts for like a week and I have finally cut them out for like 3 days.. Why am I craving them so badly? Is it because I am craving carbs? Wassup?

Macadamias are really the only nuts you should eat, unless you count coconuts.

Also, I have found that certain nuts, like walnuts are usually not very good from the supermarket (i.e. oxidized/rancid). So those I order from nutsonline.com and in the last 5lb bag I ordered there were maybe two bad nuts in the whole bag.

Well, I have been experimenting. My preferred method right now is grabbing an assortment of nuts and eating those. Usually comprised of walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, and pecans (with a preference for walnuts). It sounds like I need to add in macadamia nuts. However, with this method a pound last me like a month... and that is a pound including the shell, so I haven't been experimenting that much.

Ditto on the chicharrones. They satify that craving for crunch. Sometimes I will even put dabs of butter on them as I eat them. One of my favorite things is a slice of cold rump roast with a thick layer of cold butter on it. I eat *alot* of fat :)

When I was craving the crunch, I went through chicharrones (sometimes sprinkled with a dash of cinnamon, if I was craving sweet) like they were going out of style. They're a little salty, but they're very emotionally satisfying to eat, if that makes sense. :)

I eat meat, eggs, heavy cream and that's about it. I might have half a cup of veggies if I really want mushrooms on a steak or something. It's odd in that you feel like you should be eating veggies because it's what's you've been told all your life, but I have to say I feel fantastic 99% of the time. And yes, only grass fed "happy" cows. I don't eat birds.

About two weeks ago I stumbled across a zero carb site called zeroing in on health that advocates a meat only diet. It's pretty interesting and I've found that the lower my carb intake, the more "allergic" rxn I have when I add them back to my diet. I've been amazed at how well I've been doing on meat and water/tea/coffee.

So Rebecca do you just eat meat? I have been doing that for two days and it's not too bad so far. I feel like I am sensitive to carbs for some reason. Is an all meat diet healthy? (grassfed/pastured of course)

Yeah it may be the crunch.. hopefully I will get used to Paleo. It has been getting easier and easier though. It feels good that I have cut out all sugar though! One day at a time.

Nuts are like chips. They are tasty and simple... but this is when someone has un-shelled them for you (processed if you will). I only buy my nuts in their shells now. So I only eat the amount for which I am willing to put in the work. When you have to crack open each nut and pick out the pieces your quickly get to the point that it is no longer worth the effort, much quicker than when you can toss a handful in your mouth at a time.

Shelled nuts are more paleo!

The ONLY way for me to stop my cravings for them is total abstinence. Once I get started with some, it's on.

Could it be the "crunch" you are craving and not the nuts? Not a lot of paleo foot is crunchy and I think it's satisfying to crunch on food. You might want to see if substituting something like jerky can give you they psychological satisfaction.

Also I think nuts are filling and I agree with Helen, add more fat.

You might want to try eating more fat and protein and see if that helps.

p.s. I tend to crave nuts when I haven't eaten enough fat and protein early enough in the day.

Just make sure they're macadamias and it won't be nearly as bad. The fatty acid profile is quite good.

They're just like a chip, you can't have only one. IMO, nuts have a small amount of carbs. For anyone trying to keep their carbs low, nuts trigger that craving. I have noticed that as I taper my carbs lower and lower, the smallest amount from any form trigger a binge. This goes for vegetables as well.
