Hankering for all things SPICY!

5'4, 160lbs, Female. Workouts are 4-5 days a week with a mix of Crossfit, agility circuits and isometric resistance training. Since going Paleo 6 months ago, I've experimented with several herbs and spices in my cooking. Lately though, I seem to be addicted to anything with heat. Not sure if this has anything to do with the increased metabolic conditioning but lately feel that it's necessary to put cayenne, chili flakes, jalape??os, hot sauce in everything.

Does anyone know whether a craving for spicy food in general relates to a nutritional deficiency? Perhaps the body's homeostatic attempt to maintain an elevated metabolism during resting periods? Thanks for your thoughts!

I'm not sure, but after I had stomach surgery. I craved much spicier foods (along with rare meat).

It's pretty ironic that so many people love a biochemical that evolved to inhibit mammalian consumption.

I'd say you've simply discovered the joy of spicy food. Chilis (sp?) are sexy, so enjoy them. Half the world seems to be addicted to the stuff, for that matter.

Hot sauce should be put on everything. If you have kids you should start them early with tabasaco sauce (the pepper can be tricky to work with) and horseradish.

I have the exact same thing. I used to have a lot of stomach acid problems, so I got used to staying away from spicy foods all together. Since I've gone paleo, my stomach problems are gone, and I can eat spicy foods again. Now I crave them like crazy! One thing I read is that you crave spicy foods when you're having a problem keeping cool because it makes you sweat. I've also read that it can be the sign of a number of nutrient deficiencies, but nothing that you couldn't get from a multi vitamin. Now I'm wondering if eating paleo and lifting has something to do with it...
