Paleokits! I love them, but which is the best

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created November 09, 2010 at 11:22 AM

So I was going to order some PaleoKits as my old Crossfit box [Crossfit Durham, baby!] used to buy them and sell them pretty much at cost.

Anyway, my question is: which of the PaleoKits is the best? I think CFit Durham used to order the Steve's Original PaleoKits but I wouldn't be against trying a new brand if a lot of people thought it tasted better.

Thanks in advance, my Paleo friends

Your suppliers are most likely small (grass-fed AND finished usually are) and locked into contracts with you. Anyone can copy your ingredients using other suppliers. You were spot-on with one thing, there sure are a lot of people out there looking to make a quick buck....Steve.

Really? US Wellness Meats discloses its suppliers, as does Chipotle and many other companies. Making jerky requires infrastructure that most people don't have. The truth is that meat comes from an animal that had a life. People want to know what kind of life. Maybe you could at least get certified Animal Welfare Approved? Besides that, I believe not disclosing them is a violation of California law, but I'll have to look at the code and find the passage.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd add something personally to this thread. I started PaleoKits and Steve's Original to provide honest, clean food for the Paleo and CrossFit communties (it actually started to give kids in Camden who were training with me something to eat instead of cafeteria lunches).

I take immense pride in selecting only the HIGHEST quality meat and food for our products. We won't disclose our suppliers because of the growing number of copycats out there looking to make a quick buck. The fact of the matter is that to be certified as Grass-fed or organic (we are not organic by the way), it must pass USDA requirements (which are stringent, especially when it comes to grass-fed meat products). Steve's Original has gone to great lengths to have all of our products USDA approved.

On a personal level, I am a hardcore Paleo follower, as are my employees. We only eat, endorse, and sell what we believe in. Our commitment to customers is that everytime they order from us they can be sure they're getting the highest quality food, from an honest company with great customer service.

I feel bad saying this, since Steve's is for a good cause, but they won't disclose their meat suppliers for "obvious competitive reasons." They say they are humanely raised and grassfed, but who is really checking up on that?

PLEASE folks, be aware that Dick Stevens Nuts has a history of NOT sending out product. Just do a Google search for the company and then read the dozens of reports by customers like me that have NEVER received a single item for our money.

Steer VERY clear from this company - they are a scam and a complete rip off!

They have been reported to the Better Business Bureau and even they were not able to get the company to respond or get the company to send us a refund.

I really would hate to see anyone else get ripped off by Jeff Eckert - some folks have lost hundreds of dollars.

http://www.bbb.org/chicago/business-reviews/food-products/kbr-sales-and-marketing-in-park-ridge-il-88383150

Just google Dick Stevens Nuts and then read through all the pages of complaints by LOTS of people saying that they have never received a single item for their money.

I ordered mine May 2010 - I have never received my order and still have not received my refund though he keeps saying he will send it, while at the same time he is trying very hard to be a vile and hateful angry nasty person.

So I don't know about Dick's Nuts, but I've had a TON of paleokits from Steve's, and their customer service and their products are fantastic. Maybe I'm naive (well, I'm pretty sure I am), but they do have grassfed listed on the product, and there are so many crossfit boxes out there that order the kits, and they have the steve's club organization, I kinda think Steve's got too much on the line to lie about the food. He'd lose his company, credibility, etc. as soon as people found out (and I'm sure if someone really tried, they could investigate). Anyway, I LOVE especially the coconut jerky mix. I think not all the kits are grass-fed (Steve, is that right?), so I try to usually get them, but the coconut is SOOO good, I sometimes just say, oh well, and go for that one. I guess I would ask if the coconut could be made with the grass fed, and if they could use organic strawberries. It does not sound like they do, and there is a lot of info out there re. berries and toxins (so if you're choosing what organics to get and where to buy non-organic, berries are listed on the get-'em-organic list b/c they absorb the toxins so heavily. Anyway, one time I got a couple of packets that seemed a little off, and it was SO easy to just return them and get new ones in exchange. They have been totally quick with their service and very responsive. I've gotten a ton of product from Steve's and I'll get more!! Today, in fact... :-)

I ordered some of "Dick Steven" Jerky/Nut kits and never got them, i had to file a complaint with the state attorney generals office before i got a refund, he kept telling me i would get them over a 4-5 month peroid, Then he said he would send my order anyway, never showed up. The above read on the x-fit board is legit.

As far as paleokits, Steve and his gang are spot-on! Always a pleasure to deal with and fast shipping. I'm not sure where they get the beef from, just ask steve, i'm sure he can tell you! The only thing i would like to see is a lower sodium amount in pk's.

Just my 2 cents,

I have tried Steves and although sold for a good cause I found them too oily and salty. I absolutely love Dicks Nuts packs they have beef jerky, macadamia, cherries, and sunflower seeds. Jerky is tender and packs seem very fresh. It is a perfect mix nutrient wise for the numbers I try to maintain as an active crossfitter concerned with body composition and performance. I travel often and keep these in my backpack as an emergency meal.

I LOVE the paleokits! I can't recommend their seasonal flavors enough - the apple pie kit is amazing and the pumpkin crunch bar is delicious as well!

I agree, though, that they get wicked oily and messy. Kinda stinks as I tend to eat them when I am out and about and on the run, so I end up getting nasty oil everywhere. Make sure you have a napkin close by!

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I find the Steve's paleokits to be overpriced and insanely sweet, sticky and unpleasant from all the fruit juice they use (apple and pineapple juice). Which is too bad, as I'm in need of emergency rations for my long dogwalking, hiking trips and visits to the staunchly neolithic in-laws. :)

Okay ... my update for my experiences with Dick Stevens Nuts...

I finally after numerous emails to the BBB and investigators on this case received a refund from a Mike McDermott on behalf of KBR foods.

So it took me from May 25, 2010 to August 1, 2011 to receive ANY kind of satisfaction from this company.

BTW I had to dispute the whole reason why my order was not fulfilled, Jeff Eckert was saying to the BBB right up to the end that the reason why I did not get my order of COOKIES was because there was a shortage of grass fed BEEF.

He and KBR foods have NEVER explained how a BEEF shortage would affect a single order of cookies to this date.

So yes, I finally got a refund - after countless phone calls, non stop insults from Jeff Eckert for having the nerve to expect to get something for my money, and numerous emails to the authorities and documenting my HONEST and TRUTHFUL experiences with Jeff and KBR Foods everywhere online there was a discussion about their products.

So even though I got a refund 15 months after ordering for the first time, I would STRONGLY urge people to NOT spend their money with ANY company Jeff Eckert is a part of.

I found his conduct unprofessional, slimy, immature, hostile, passive-aggressive, malicious, misleading, unethical, dishonest and nasty in every aspect. Getting a refund does NOT erase the past 15 months of obnoxious juvenile behavior that has so clearly been documented by his own conduct online and by trying to bury the truth by posting stupid stuff pretending to be other people, like we all can't figure out who it really is.

Steer FAR FAR FAR away from this man and anything he has dealings with is my best advice borne of my personal and direct experience with him extensively over the past 15 months.

IMO, he has earned EVERY warning and bad reference you find out there if you google him or Dick Stevens Nuts. Consider yourselves warned!

Now we will just see if anything goes wrong with the refund ... I just don't trust this guy at all ...

Melissa, Hunter Gather: Yea, I can definitely see the concern there. Especially with terms like 'organic' being so commercially subjective now. I guess they do claim grass-fed. Does anyone know what farms, local or otherwise, Steve's Original uses?

I do love Steve's Original, though, the strawberry, jerky, and macadamia nuts are delicious and DEFINITELY hit the spot after an intense WOD

Does anyone know which has more sodium?

Steve's are greasy and slimey and messy...yuck! You need a moist towelette after you eat them and then your fingers smell for the whole day. If you do buy them, make sure you have a fork but its like eating a canned stew with your fingers and the taste is somewhat weird, the nuts are all soft and the fruit all tastes like meat. It's too bad about Dick Stevens, their product was by far the best, last I heard they signed a deal with Whole Foods and Trader Joe's I too have seen the same losers posting crap about them all over the web, it appears to be the same people over and over. Like this Chuck guy above. I can only imagine Chuck your are lonely and bored and have nothing better to do than try and tear down little guys trying to make a living. Shame on you, you will get your's though...tick, tick, tick...
