Are Ezekiel bread and organic Bob red mill oats (about 1/4 cup a day) accepted on paleo diet? I have just started and have a 115 lb goal to reach. I am currently 5'2 and weight 155. In also eat fish, and insects (dried mealworms)

Also, should I limit fruit on my plan>?

So.. strictly speaking.. oats are out.

Ezekiel bread ingredients (it has an ingredient list so that's your first clue that it's probably out) list:

Organic Sprouted Wheat, Organic Sprouted Barley, Organic Sprouted Millet, Organic Malted Barley, Organic Sprouted Lentils, Organic Sprouted Soybeans, Organic Sprouted Spelt, Filtered Water, Fresh Yeast, Organic Wheat Gluten, Sea Salt.


wheat, barley, millet, spelt, wheat gluten... all grains, all "out".
lentils, soybeans... legumes... also "out".

I totally agree with Eric. "Paleo" has come to mean something very different to each individual; it's no longer strictly eating paleolithic foods, rather, finding a less problematic way of long-term eating. We aren't ACTUALLY cavemen (if you buy meat at the store or use olive oil on your salad or even use real utensils, I don't want to hear how you're SO PALEO), so feel free to experiment to see where issues arise or don't. Many people find oats pretty benign. Gluten though, seems particularly problematic in most...even "clean SAD" dieters find just eliminating gluten to make a world of difference. Good luck!

Ezekiel bread may have sprouted grains, but it also has gluten added per the ingredients label. Adding any grains at all is not a good idea, but this one is particularly questionable.

A large amount of fruit is probably not going to be in your best interests if your goal is weight loss. I sure wouldn't restrict it severely, however.

I think one of the most important things about eating/being paleo is becoming educated to the point where one is able to confidently make the "right" decision about not only food choices, but lifestyle choices as well. Choices that, in the long run, free up one's genes to really express themselves. I think you've got quite a bit of reading to do in order to get there. The paleo community seems to have a very n=1 mindset (meaning figure out, then do, what works for you); that being said, one of the typical core tenets of a paleo way of eating is no grains. That would rule out both Ezekiel bread and oats.

Some people feel that oats are a better grain than wheat, but paleo and grains typically do not go together.

Think a variety of meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats. If you have weight to lose, less on the fruits and nuts.

Edit: Also, best of luck to you on your weight-loss goals. It can be daunting.
