notifications without email?

is there anyway to make the notifications so when you log onto the site/visit the homepage you get little popups or a little notification icon so u can see your notifications rather than having them emailed to you... kind of annoying to get 50 emails saying "has commented on this thread". i know many other sites give options to how you want your notifcations recieved.

Very much second a direct linkthrough on all notifications to the comment/answer/response which generated the "notification" in the first place.

In general, the site looks much better than it did 1-2 weeks ago and is actually very pleasant. Up and down-voting is very useful, and in general, the site actually seems more intuitive & functional/efficient than the previous version.

@dzone

Again, I apologize for what seems to be a stream of snivels. It's always easier to find problems than to fix them. IMO the site is vastly improved from the initial changeover. Developer team's response has been quite impressive.

Any chance the comment text could be made less "grey" more black w/o having to resort to bold? :)

or maybe just boost the font size?

Hi @BobK - I've added #2 to the list and we're working on #1 and #3. Stay tuned :)

Some more "nice to haves" 1) Directly linking through to answers & comments associated with mail notifications would make the user experience a LOT better. 2) A button to sort answers (within a question thread) would awesome. I've hacked this, just edit the url.. replace votes with dates. 3) An easy way to get back to the question I'm following? 4) When hovering over a selection icon...perhaps a link to a definition? 5) Profile page needs some help...will comment another time

Continued... even though character counter shows characters left, long comments tend to "hang" & not post? :(

Character counter seems flaky

My apologies for the constant string of snivels. I'm an engineer so it's second nature to me to find things that could be made to work better. You only have so much bandwidth & resources. You're doing a good job repairing PH. Thanks for the Up & Down arrows and losing the Like - thumbs up icon for answers. Maybe 'Like' on comment could be changed to Up arrow for consistency?

Hi Bob - this is actually on our roadmap (short-term) to add - more ways to get notifications other than email. We are taking all the product feedback (as AnswerHub) and looking at ways that we can improve the core product.

I think the character counter gets confused by comment text were the author uses the return to create white space.

Cutting & pasting stuff also seems to create problems. But generally speaking the comment text handling seems to have improved.... except for the less than fully black color of the text.

Of course, we could switch to BOLD. :)

Surprised there is no function for notifications upon log-in / in-site (perhaps at the top?), because it seems rather necessary -- crucial, even, especially with the more refined ("@", etc.) notifications system on the new site.

Yes... the near steady stream of notifications is a getting to be a bit much.

I digest mode or a single "once per day" notification might be better.

Two issues I have with the notification....perhaps the same issue.

Clicking through on a notification of answer or a comment lands on the top voted answer....NOT on the answer or comment that generated the norification.

Dave / dzone....you want to drive traffic you gotta make is FUN to visit / EASY for find stuff. It's all about minimizing clicks AND scrolling epscially for mobile users.

To find the comment that generated the notifcation ya gotta dig.... deep! :(

Another thing that just happen to me, on a sub-comment to a post it wouldnt let me submit it without removing a good deal of it, even though it said i still had 150 characters left. not sure if glitch or format error on my part.
