So far the issue hasn't come up. If it did come up I figure most of us would just go get the medicated shampoo and use it. I don't like antibiotics very much, but there are still conditions under which I would use them. A medicated shampoo would be a similar sort of modern thing that I don't like very much, but would use if necessary.

I have very long hair and work with kids, so I've had this problem.

The best way is to get some conditioner - any kind will do, I prefer the cheap sort without 'cones, but whatever you prefer. Completely slather your hair in it. I use about half a bottle (like I said, long hair!) Then pop a shower cap on top and leave it overnight.

The conditioner in the enclosed space kills the lice and makes the hair very slippery so that combing out the nits is easy. The next morning, give your hair a quick rinse and then comb it thoroughly with a fine-toothed comb.

Olive oil, and a fine toothed comb. I have "fond" memories of being in second grade and getting this done to my head every couple of hours or so.

Use a very narrow tooth comb and have a lot of patience, or just shave everything off.
