are green onions / scallions nightshades?

obviously not. They are alliums. Nightshades are solanaceae.

Nightshades: non-sweet, non-yam potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, ground cherries, tomatillos, tamarillos, and some poisonous ones: tobacco (if you eat it), mandrake, belladonna.

Alliums: onion, scallion, leeks, shallots, garlic, chives. (they're related to lillies, also beware that these are all toxic to cats and dogs.)
