Why am I so hungry?

I just started the paleo diet and am unsure about how to ease my way into it. I have totally cut out carbs and most dairy products with the exception to milk along with other non paleo foods. I have been eating lean meats, nuts, fresh veggies and fruits. But the problem is once I eat a meal (specifically a salad) I get full for about an hour and half then become extremely hungry. Am I not allowing for enough carbs? Today I made a salad, romaine leaves, carrots, thinly sliced chicken cubes, and cashews with dressing. I thought it would be enough, as it did fill be up for about an hour and a half, but then became hungry like I had not eaten a big meal. I am afraid my drastic 'cutting out' of non paleo foods is shocking my system.

Please help me. Thank you in advance.

Thank you so much! You have been a huge help. I am going to ease into it more slowly. I think that will do me a lot of good, as well as some of the things you have suggested.

I suggest reading the Perfect Health Diet by Paul Jaminet or at least looking up his website. http://perfecthealthdiet.com/the-diet/

Well how about getting a blood test first to see if you are deficient in any vitamins? Then you should probably increase your intake of fat and protein since it usually takes longer to digest and will leave you feeling satisfied longer. The truth is paleo isn't as perfect as you make it out to be. Its not really a one fits all kind of diet. You can base your diet around paleo and customize it based on which foods you can tolerate. There really is no point in excluding rice, potatoes, and things such as fruits and milk if you can tolerate them well.

really i had the same problem for a long time. I gave up and went to a nutritionist. Yeah. Destroyed me. So i started out again. ADD FAT wherever you can get it. Im mainly tired for a little bit after a meal. (Im actually trying to bulk, I IF and eat three large meals a day) but after a short walk im ready to go again. Just really, dont be scared of fat.

Thank you so much for your answers! I do have to say that I am slightly disspointed with the answer. Is there any way that I could not feel extreme hunger without deviating from the paleo diet? Could I just need to snack more? I really want to stay the course and give my body time to 'adjust' to this new way to life, but without starving myself or shocking it to a point of it being unhealthy.

You need to eat more fats! Choose fattier cuts of meat, have some eggs cooked in pork fat or butter, and eat some fatty fish.

Try slowly adding back carbs into your diet. There really is no point in going very low carb if it doesn't serve a specific purpose. In fact try adding back safe starches into your diet. Try to see if you can tolerate white rice or potatoes. Also make sure your getting all the essential micronutrients or else you may feel more hungry.
