In-season weight/hammer thrower(track and field) on paleo

I throw at the collegiate level. My workouts consist of 50-100 full effort throws a week depending on the phase, 4-5 OLY lift or strength lift workouts and various HIIT, some cardio, and core/ab work. I started paleo about 2 months ago and haven't had much trouble sticking to it, but I noticed that all my lifts and my throws dropped quite a bit and weren't improving the past two months until these past 2 weeks when I overloaded on sweet potatoes (about 1 a day). From my research I've noticed that many people experience a drop in energy levels when they start paleo, but I didn't really experience that, more of a drop in athletic performance. Any ideas on how to avoid that drop in performance? Or should I keep eating a sweet potato after all my practice/workouts (which is about 6 days a week)?

I also realize that I may be jumping the gun on ruling out the adjustment period, but I need to be sure as I'm almost in the heavy competition phase and need to adjust my diet properly to keep my energy/performance levels up.
