Feeling Sick and Salt Cravings - Relationship?

Hello Everyone,

Earlier this week I felt a bit ill, and ultimately ended up craving foods with high salt content (soups, the dreaded Ramen Noodles, chips, etc.).

As far back as I can remember, this seems to be a recurring craving whenever I am sick.

Is there a a biological/nutritional reason my body is craving salt nearly every time I feel ill? Is there a nurtient my body may be lacking when I get sick that causes these cravings? Is there a Paleo solution to curb these cravings when I am ill?

All advice and suggestions are welcome, thank you!

We often crave sweets when we're actually thirsty. A few pinches of good sea salt in H2O satisfies both.

Thanks for your response and suggestions. Regarding the lowered sense of smell when I am sick... I really don't have too much of an appetite when I am sick, but I still tend to just crave really salty foods.

Many electrolytes have a salty taste. Plus salt has a lot of trace minerals in it.

Same thing as craving sugar when low energy -- body want cheap bioavailable resources I can use quickly.

Eat some salt!

You are most likely craving salt because you need more salt. You could also have a lowered sense of smell, and thus need more seasoning in order to taste your food.

In addition, depending on the nature of the illness, it could cause dehydration, either by the evacuation of liquids or not taking in enough water.

Make some bone broth, add salt to it until it is "pleasantly salty," and eat.

Through attending many conferences on preventive medicine, I learned that a craving for salt may be related to a shortage of zinc gluconate, or zinc picolinate. Do you also have smelly feet? Another sign of needing zinc....an important mineral that is waisted by environmental pollution, and cigarette smoking Another observation was that people with allergies may have cerebral swelling reducing the sense of smell, thereby increasing the drive to season food. Often associated with not drinking enough water, people who are dehydrated crave salt......who really drinks 8 glasses of water.....????? Most of us would like to think we do because this health knowledge is just so elementary, and we heard about it in health class in high school!! . But our busy lives make us ignore it unless we build a routine, or a system to make us do it. We then salt our foods more because we are toxic!! We just need more mineral rich water.....Buy the best water you can afford in glass bottles. We need to supplement with zinc, from a good pharmaceutical grade vitamin company free of possible polluted chinese imported base materials.(there are no regulations requireing testin for purity or freedom from heavy metals for ie) We need to drink plenty of Mountain Valey Spring Water......the water of presidents and kings .....and for a REASON!! People who have all the money in the world choose this water. It comes from deep down in the earth, and has no acid rain pollution because Teddy Rousevelt covered the opening to this amazing water source before we became so polluted as to cause acid rain. People who are so environmentally ill they need to drag oxygen around......drink this water to get well. It is about $18 for 5 gallons....comes NOT IN PLASTIC but in glass bottles God bless.....hope this helps you.
