Day 6 of Paleo, feeling a scary sense of altered-perception/faintness

I've had it for about 30 minutes now. it feels like a bit towards fainting or losing consciousness. I feel dizzy, eyes not focusing, brain very spacey, slightly nauseous, sort of asleep and like I'm not really here or awake. Similar to my experiences with being high or drunk (feeling of detached-ness). Today is my day 6 of Paleo, have been eating 50 to 100g of carbs each day. Today I ate 2 eggs and butter with a few almonds for breakfast. I've been drinking a lot of water and getting between 9 and 12 hours of sleep. I ate an 85% dark chocolate bar slowly since around 9am till now (2:30pm) because I'm having cramps and other PMS issues and hoped it would help. Do you have any clue what might be causing this and if it is related to me changing my diet?? (prior I have been a strict vegetarian for 3 years, and around 9 of those months was strict vegan). edit- just wanted to add had a small lunch around noon (don't have much of appetite), some mixed baby greens and baked salmon. Also took some new supplements this morning- calcium/magnesium/iron and cod liver oil.

I ended up drinking a bit of water with a lot of salt in it and it didn't help immediately, but within a couple hours I felt almost normal, so maybe that was it- too low salt

definitely. If you feel thirsty a lot you are overdoing the protein and flushing electrolytes. Drink a coconut water STAT and see how you feel.

Also, in the meantime, have something to eat! :) You may start to feel better quickly. Have a sweet potato with butter, extra carbs and plenty of calories.

You should track your calories in something like Fitday or CRONometer and see what you're eating. If you're eating less carbs than you used to, you won't be as hungry, and you could under eat without realizing it. I did this when I first changed my diet; it's easy to do by mistake. You may feel fuller than you really are.

I feel like I've been getting enough calories prior to today, sometimes actually eating past being full. Today for some reason, I have very little appetite. For the past year or so I've been non-stop craving food even if stuffed. Do you still think under-eating only today could be causing this feeling?

More calories is probably what you need.

Dizziness/faintness could be salt or potassium. Remember, Paleo <> low sodium. You go low carb, you're releasing a lot of water, this will end up causing a loss of potassium and sodium, causing low blood pressure. Spaceyness is more along the lines of low carb flu though. Search for that here for the symptoms. It will take the body a while to adjust to that. Not really much you can do about that other than eat more carbs and put off the ketosis adaptation.

My guess would be the time of the month, not the diet. I occasionally suffer extreme cramps, loss of appetite and dizzy/shaky episodes. Last time it happened I had to sleep because I was afraid I'd pass out. On the other hand sometimes I won't have any symptoms at all and have a completely pain free period with normal appetite.

Oh to be a woman. Sorry I can't offer any actual advice. I hope you feel better soon.

I remember eating a chocolate bar one day, with no other proper food or meals, sporatic. I felt nauseous, dizzy, high and than depressed. It was crazy and lasted for 3 days.

I would say it is related to your recent diet change. I get this every time I restart Paleo after a cheat or falling off the wagon. As a matter of fact I feel like it right now. I find it is especially common when I know my carbs are lower like your range of 50g-100g. It passes if you stick it through. Sometimes eating some tomatoes or sweet potato to give a little carb boost helps, but also sets you back if you are looking to maintain the lower carb level. My symptoms right now are dizziness, trouble focusing (eyes and mind), fatigue, agitation, nausea (possibly the most annoying ), shaking and headache.

I felt similarly when I started doing paleo because I was also trying to get into ketosis. I got very bad nausea and even threw up twice. It passes, though. I felt better in a couple of days. Be sure you are getting enough calories and add salt to all of your food. It really will help because you are probably losing a lot of water right now.

I can't answer about PMS but I think your diet is pretty good and your body is adjusting and will for at least another week.

I used to get lighted headed too but it was when hormones were out of whack (adrenals, thyroid) and I wasn't low carb at the time.
