Help! Throbbing Neck Pain?!

A few days ago, I posted that I had gotten my parents to start a paleo diet (http://paleohacks.com/questions/86812/hack-my-moms-morning-shake#axzz1iFgs5em4)

They have been doing it for 3-4 days now, and ever since, my mom has had throbbing pain in her neck at night. I believe it is either in the carotid artery or jugular vein (no idea if thats even remotely correct).

She has woken up at night every night with the pain but during the day she is fine. I don't know if it is related to the diet, but it literally started since she started going paleo. Could it be the increased fat in her diet? I don't want her to abandon paleo after 3 days, but as of now she is suspicious, and probably has a right to be.

She hasn't had any surgery or any other trauma that would cause it. Through a google search, I found carotidynia, but not sure what would suddenly cause that. Any ideas?

She may need to supplement Magnesium. It's a muscle relaxant, among other things.

Most of us are deficient, and for some reason the deficiency symptoms seem to show up more after going Primal/Paleo.

Might be a salt issue, too much or too little, or dehydration. Might also be caffeine withdrawal.

Has your mom had a physical recently? This could be something minor but it could also be something she needs checked out.

After that, you can think about routine things like her pillow, temperatures, etc. In general, I doubt that changing what she ate for a few days could cause anything, but it could aggravate something that already existed.

I sometimes wake up at night with a pain in my hip or back or neck and in my case it seems to be a combination of body position and dreams that cause me to clench my muscles.
