Day 4 of Paleo - must be low carb flu, but feeling so awful I don't think I can continue

I started the Paleo diet on Friday and it is now Monday and I just don't know if this is for me. I felt ill starting Saturday morning. I was drinking a ton of water and was in the bathroom all day. Felt better when I caved and had some toast. I have a low appetite, anything I have prepapred in advance makes my stomach turn, have nausea, headaches and very lethargic. Is there a better way I can ease myself into this?? Friends and husband are not having the same symptoms at all.

Morrigan, stop being an asshole, there's better ways of expressing your opinion and disagreement than being an arrogant prat.

I actually think they must have picked up a food borne pathogen with those symptoms. It's just a coincidence that they have it now.

Easy: Eat carbs. Sweet potatoes, potatoes, rice, and/or fruit. If you're trying to lose weight, the sole arbiter is caloric balance, not macronutrient composition.

'The Paleo diet'? Pray tell what is this definitive diet because it can't find it.

Wearing the birkenstocks is the key element. Can't leave those out!

I completely agree... the one thing that did give me trouble though was getting off of wheat. For some reason my body craved it for a few days. I just advice to eat some rice, potatoes, or high carb veggies to make sure you're getting plenty of carbs.

BS. sugar is not a drug that needs quitting. If you starve yourself of carbohydrates/sugar you're starving your body of the fuel that it needs to run, which is glucose of course. that's the reason you feel awful not some Paleo Cleansing Die-off B***hit

Paleo is not low carb by design or by necessity.

Why are you doing low carb? Paleo is not necessarily or even often low carb.

Maybe I am taking crazy pills...

I don't mean to be insensitive, but what you are saying is that you are feeling bad from eating meat, vegetables and some fruit, and so are now going back to eating what you were eating before. Quite what was that?

Honestly this site gives me the shivers sometimes, what are people self-prescribing?

Somewhere along the way people must be going from eating twinkies and poptarts to doing a two week bone broth fast whilst wearing birkenstocks.

Sorry I am just concerned when I read these sorts of questions because:

EAT FRESH MEAT/FISH/EGGS, COLOURFUL VEGETABLES, STARCHY VEGETABLES AND SOME FRUIT.

That's it. Honestly.

If this is somehow making you feel ill, then I don't know. Someone slap me please.

Whether you are intentionally cutting carbs or not, paleo is generally lower carb than SAD because people eat so much junk and everything is processed, usually with added wheat flour hidden in it somewhere. So you may be experiencing a loss of excess stored glycogen, and with it fluid. While that is generally a good thing, it can upset the sodium potassium balance in your body.

If you're not trying to cut carbs, you can eat fruit and starchy veggies to relive it. If you are trying to cut carbs (and not all of us agree with those who say it's not good to cut carbs), then you need to take extra care to restore the sodium/potassium balance. Drink some salty broth, eat plenty of veggies full of potassium or sprinkle a little low sodium salt on your veggies (but you can use regular salt too, you should not cut out salt).

Toast is the last thing you want to use to deal with how you're feeling. You ARE going through wheat and sugar withdrawal--and toast is nothing but wheat--starch which turns to sugar immediately in your body. Eating toast is like drinking alcohol after a binge--the "hair of the dog that bit you" may feel better in the short term, but in the long term, it's really bad for you. Paleo, whatever it is or is not, is grain free, and there's good reasons for that.

First don't cave to toast, it just makes the flu last longer.

If you're having trouble or cravings try eating some fruit, it will help keep your body from completely freaking out about having sugar withdrawal.

In my honest opinion there's no easy way to ease into it, it's just something that has to be done, like quitting smoking. Some people transition really easily and some it takes more time. Just stick with it and don't give in.

Honestly sounds more like it could be a stomach bug.

What were you eating before; what are you trying to eat now?

Stay away from gluten.. but - its a well known fact that when you suddenly lower your carb intake it can make you dizzy and tired so im not quite sure of why some of the responders are having such a hard time believing the persons claim. I would try to eat a little bit of "safe starch" alongside your meat. Sweet potatoes is a nutritious option. I found that i was having dizzy spells and feeling weak when first going low carb. Try looking at the recommendations of "safe starches" ...google that.

Eat more calories but not toast! Try some fried plantains, fried in butter or coconut oil, or bacon fat etc. That may help easy you into paleo better.

Read the book wheat belly by william davis. He explains that when we eat wheat , it releases opiate chemicals that make thier way to the brain. This causes addiction in most people.

i agree with what mash said. if you dont want to eat a fruit to ease in (i dont recommend doing that simply because some fruits have a high amount of sugar) try to get your mouth on raw milk. i feel great and i have absolutely no problem digesting raw milk. other than my raw milk input, try what mash said.
