Importance of upper body strength

I know I've read lots about how important upper body strength is to health and long life. I think it was mentioned at the AHS too. But now I can't find anything - I'm sure it had something to do with upper body muscle and the insulin response? Can anyone enlighten me?

would the location of the lean mass matter? I mean, I can't see the upper body's musculature being any different than the lower body's regarding anything like insulin-sensitivity or anything else. Course, a wide back is the shit, period.

Chicks dig guys with upper body strength.

Wrapped up into that equation is sexiness > sex > pleasure > happiness > robust health > long life.

Arms are body parts you can show off in public without being arrested.

If it's that important I will die young. I'm a skinny pear shape with shoulder impingement issues (and re-occurring rotator cuff tendinitis) which prevent me from training my upper body nearly as much as I would like. Lower body and core strength is a piece of cake though.

Generally I think the more lean mass, the healthier and more robust you will be. But where we're able to build that lean mass is hormonal and genetic...

I find lower body strength in a woman very attractive. Arent the most effective exercises, for males or females, the ones that work the biggest muscles in the body, which are in the thighs? Doug McGuff at Body by Science says the whole body gets a real metabolic jolt from exercises like squats and deadlifts. That's been my experience -- they wipe me out.
