Are muscular women sexually attractive?

Answered on August 13, 2017
Created May 17, 2013 at 4:18 PM

I'm not asking for personal preference,I'm just wondering is it more sexually appealing than skinny or skinny-fat? If so,is there a biological reason for this? Also, I know being "skinny fat" is unhealthy but why is it oftentimes regarded as attractive if this is the case?

Call me a chubby chaser, but I'm digging the 35% bod. Granted, most women at that bf% probably aren't proportioned as nicely as that lady. I used that site/pics to estimate my own bf%.

Yeah, science can do some amazing things with implants - sure, the prefrontal cortex says they're fake, but the reptilian purrs at the view. I know, I know, no accounting for taste, right? Still, if there were some crossfit+paleo ladies with their own workout/lifestyle shows on ESPN or otherwise, I'd happily watch.

"Do you really expect your girl to have muscle definition?" I don't date women, but if I did, yes I'd expect them to have muscle definition instead of being a flabby sack of protoplasm. I don't know where you got the belief that women don't have muscle definition unless they weight train (which all women should be doing btw.) I know several women who are cardio fanatics and they have good muscle definition. There's nothing un-feminine about muscles, as long as you don't overdo it like Lady #1.

There are different degrees of the hour glass shape. The shape begins at the shoulders. A girl with a smaller shoulders wont look as hourglassy as a girl starting off with bigger wider shoulders, her waist wont look as small and wont be as balanced with the hips. Im not sure that the hourglass figure connotes the healthiest either..there are tonnes of female athletes whose hips are naturally slimmer.. or for example a swimmers body shape..are they less healthy that say a Kim Kardashian ?excessive junk in the trunk.

@Roth Do you really expect your girl to have muscle definition? Females have muscle definition only if they weight train, which is not exactly a natural pursuit for feminine females. You've ruled out the 99% of population and all the truly decent looking girls, and have only those who mistakenly think muscles make them look better, and nothing better to offer.

As a PhD psychologist with training in evolutionary psychology, married to a MS psychologist with much more training in evolutionary psychology, I feel qualified to say that this is bullshit. There's a convincing story and some cross-cultural evidence for preference for an hourglass shape, but there are many other factors in play (e.g., health signaling). Also, the fact that a preference is an evolved adaptation does not mean that it's any more "real," OR ANY MORE POWERFUL, than preferences based on socialization or personal preference.

I wish losing your period had nothing to do with overall female health. I'd love to get to a low body fat % with the muscled look (yes, that far off dream that I actually have to get off my butt to try and achieve) but I'd rather not be unhealthy. I'd also just rather not have my period, since the last thing I care about is reproduction, lol.

@jake -- I don't know why -- I have never been a big fan of Kate Upton. I fully admit that she's in the upper .001% in terms of beauty, but there are numerous models I would rank above Kate. I cannot point to any one reason, but she just doesn't do it for me.

Also, 36-24-36 may be the "ideal" body dimensions, but muscle tone can hide "imperfections" better than a soft body. It's the inverse of the "beauty ratio". When subjects are shown with blemishes, smooth skin -- even without the proper beauty ratio -- trumps the "beauty ratio".

earning potential is not equal to charisma. There is a slob in my neighborhood who has little charisma -- his wife is gorgeous. His only positives -- he's got LOTS of money. true, CD, but the original reference from the OP was to the "beauty ratio" that is seen in faces and has remained constant throughout known history. a certain proportion to the face is indicative of health. is there an equivalent for bodies? what is indicative of "true health" in a body? and you're right about "earning potential," although I would probably call that "charisma," and I think it IS as important as physical appearance. (I don't mean crazy extroverted charisma, just the traits all people, even quiet ones, put forth as their personality.)

The middle girl has rounded muscles, though. When I've been that fit, my muscles would look very squared off in comparison. And even with a bit more fat than that, the muscles just pushed the fat out in that same squared-off look. I looked better, more rounded, when the muscles got smaller.

natural adaptation is not a point, rather a moving target based on what genes/ traits are successful in the current environment. We have moved passed an environment where physical traits dominate natural selection. For some, attractiveness in today's society is as much about earning potential as it is physical.

Here we go again... This question was supposed to be asked in the beginning of spring and it is almost summer now.

As a woman and a wanna-be anthropologist - no, I believe girls should be feminine and curvy.

Here is my answer:

There is ONLY ONE evolutionary approved shape - an hourglass figure. If you are not an hourglass, your genes are not the best.

By the way, Dr. Cate mentions this in her book. If you eat well during your pregnancy, your daughter will win the genetic lottery.

It just depends on how muscular. For example, one of these women is too muscular the other one is muscular and very sexually attractive. If you're too skinny you may come off as malnourished or too stressed which isn't attractive because who wants to be around a girl who's biochemically stressed out all the time? You don't need to be super muscular just get some vigorous enjoyable exercise several times a week and your body will auto-adjust itself.

The girl in the Nike shirt might be more attractive to most guys than this girl:

If only because physically active women will tend to have a different personality than skinny fat. Just like how different shaped men tend to have different personalities.

The middle girl has rounded muscles, though. When I've been that fit, my muscles would look very squared off in comparison. And even with a bit more fat than that, the muscles just pushed the fat out in that same squared-off look. I looked better, more rounded, when the muscles got smaller.

I think this is a very interesting question. For instance, Kate Upton, on the SI Swimsuit cover this year (2013) has a very smooth, rounded belly. When I first saw her, I kind of did a double take. Don't get me wrong, she's beautiful, she has other assets, and I would never call her "fat." She's just definitely thin-but-rounded.

When I look at Nike girl above, I think she has an amazing body. But her face is almost too muscular, angular, almost a little masculine. She would be the opposite of the "feminine softness" of Kate Upton.

Then I look at ancient art, and the women depicted vary from "normal" to often borderline obese, many of them even "muscular-fat." And there are those cultures where true fatness is seen as beautiful: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6904640.stm

So then, which "should" be the most attractive from a biological-adaptive-mating standpoint? I think that's really hard to pin down, with so many different cultural preferences. But my guess is that it probably varies depending on the availability of food...

When subjects are shown with blemishes, smooth skin -- even without the proper beauty ratio -- trumps the "beauty ratio".

natural adaptation is not a point, rather a moving target based on what genes/ traits are successful in the current environment. true, CD, but the original reference from the OP was to the "beauty ratio" that is seen in faces and has remained constant throughout known history. a certain proportion to the face is indicative of health. is there an equivalent for bodies? what is indicative of "true health" in a body? and you're right about "earning potential," although I would probably call that "charisma," and I think it IS as important as physical appearance. (I don't mean crazy extroverted charisma, just the traits all people, even quiet ones, put forth as their personality.)

Lots of quite plump women are muscular too. I suspect that a lot of the 'rounded' examples would qualify.

The evolutionary psychology rationales don't account for fashions if female appearance. While searching desparately for simplistic formulas. Even so, things like hip-to-waist ratios may appeal across a wide variety of body make-ups.

Extremes of leanness and fatness seem unhealthy. Many actresses/models look ghastly without makeup and careful camera positioning.

I, personally, think of the range between Katherin Hepburn and Mae West. One is thin without stringiness or gauntness, the other is very plump, but obviously strong and not at all 'floppy' or impaired.

Lean is lovely - my taste in women runs just the way it does in men - tall, lean, with the long muscles than come from swimming rather than choppy, overly-determined bulk. It is the kind of muscles that matter to me - a guy with huge muscles is just as weird as a girl with huge muscles. That just looks like neurosis and narcissism to me, as opposed to vibrant good health.

I don't get the cultural preoccupation with huge muscles on men. Is it analogous to ultra skinny women? Both things seem terribly hard to achieve without constant obsessive attention.

No, not in my opinion. Others will tell you different though. I've seen women that wouldn't be considered pretty in our society that I've though were very beautiful and the same the other way around. On average as a general rule for myself the most attractive woman would be from 20-30% body fat as referenced by the link in CD's answer. It's hard to answer your question without my personal preference, sorry.

Maybe this would answer your query in more detail:

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/cutting-edge-leadership/201207/which-body-shapes-are-most-sexually-attractive

In summary of the article linked: men tend to find females attractive based on a lower waist to hip ratio and an average BMI as these are associated with youth and sexual maturity. The focus would be on youth health and fertility, as the main driver being the mates ability to produce offspring.

Different people will find different body types attractive. From the photos Stephen posted I personally think that the best looking is the one in the middle, but I know that there are girls out there who would call that too muscular.

I don't know if there's a biological preference - I think we're conditioned to find certain figures attractive. I think skinny fat is considered attractive possibly because so many females in the media are skinny fat. I remember looking through some celebrity diet and workout plans a while ago and they all had a typical low fat diet and daily cardio session, no strength training and barely any protein.

In my experience as a champion female bodybuilder I KNOW first hand there are plenty of males who are "sexually attracted" to musculr women. None of the female bodybuilders I know, and I know some "very muscualr women", have any problem attracting men. Moreover, the "hourglass figure" is not exlusive to non bodybuildinbg women. There are plenty of female bodybuiders who display the "ONLY ONE evolutionary approved shape gentic propensity for a X' frame". Being a muscular female has absolutley nothing do to with having an X-frame, although having muscle on an X frame can make for a very "sexually attractive" appearance.

I suspect most people would agree that the weightlifter type overly muscled are not sexy, that the typical what we call in the UK page 3 girls - large breasts, slim waist etc are very very sexy and that that very thin up and down thin like Victoria Beckham are not quite so sexy.

If we then move on to women who are slim but never exercise against someone the same weight who does then the ones who exercise a reasonable amount will be better looking.

Face counts too (and I'm a woman so I suppose should not be on the thread) - if the body is great but the face not pretty that's not good (same with men - if he has a reasonable body but an ugly face then it's no go).

I don't like them too shredded, but I always did like Kiana Tom's look. Muscular, but still feminine:

are-muscular-women-sexually-attractive?

Too bad ESPN doesn't carry her show anymore.

I like lean muscle build with a small layer of fat overlaying it for softness on women. But we'll all never agree on this. Still, if my gf lost her butt and thighs I would be injecting all of her meals with as many calories as possible.
