Why do we crave milk?

Answered on September 12, 2014
Created October 14, 2011 at 6:09 PM

This is an offshoot question inspired by this thread.

There are times when I can eat anything and not feel satisfied until I drink some milk.

By what mechanism could milk uniquely satisfy hunger?

EDIT: I'm now convinced that these cravings were merely for the casomorphins produced from the digestion of milk, and not the nutritional content of the milk itself.

GOMAD is just silly... it's for hormone-laden skinny teenagers that don't know how to eat ENOUGH. You try that prank being a 30'ish average genetics guy and you'll have a bit of a disappointment in your mid-section after some time of doing that.

Some of my earliest memories are of how awful milk and cream tasted. I've never craved it although I do crave wheat despite the many symptoms it causes. I guess the wheat symptoms are mild enough that they don't create an aversion while the dairy stuff actually tastes like spoiled food to me.

Agree with Jay that sometimes food intolerances are the things we crave - no idea why, but I experienced it with white potatoes :(

I drink a liter or more of milk pretty daily. But there are some days I get a real strong desire to drink it.

Me too!! Sometimes I feel like I NEED a big glass of whole milk or a bowl of ice cream. Then I get a killer stomach ache and wonder why I thought it was a good idea. But sometimes, that is the only thing that will satisfy...weird!

I also wonder if women crave milk more than men -- from various discussions around Paleo forums, I get the impression that Paleo women are more likely to include substantial amounts of dairy than men are.

Oh me too! If I know there's dairy in the fridge, it talks to me (how does it know my name?!) until I eat it. I think about it in the same way I thought about bread when I quit it -- constantly.

Well the title says "we" but the question says "I"...so maybe answers in the way of food allergies sometimes reveal themselves as cravings would be a starting point.

Putting a smiley at the end of "I deny the validity of your premise" does make it seem nicer.

Opioid peptides, perhaps? See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casomorphin

You also do cover all your macronutrients and a number of micronutrients (Ca, Mg, K, etc) by drinking milk. That may be uniquely satiating.

I feel weird drinking the milk of a different species. Hell, I'd probably feel weird if human milk was a normal drink.

I find that if I'm not eating enough fat, I crave cheese to satisfy my "fat tooth," so maybe it's a similar mechanism? That'd be my totally unscientific answer. :)

I used to be a milk fiend... I was one of the people who, when trying to gain some mass, thought GOMAD (gallon of milk a day) was FUN. One of the best moments in college (from HI moved to CA) is when I noticed that milk was something like 2 gallons for $4-5. Wtf? Half price than what I'm used to!! Expiration date on dairy products = worthless information, it'd be gone within the week.

Also, I loved it all; skim, 1%, 2%, 4% (whole).

Fast forward some years, I removed all calories via drink (I do still indulge very infrequently), and do not crave milk at all.

I do crave ice cold water though!

well your gut bacteria, fungus, yeast may crave it. or your brain/physiology may have become addicted to some part of the experience. or you may need more protein or more fat or just more calories.
