Milk alternatives?

Answered on August 19, 2014

What are the pros and cons of each milk substitute? Coconut milk, almond milk, hemp milk, etc (soy milk - avoid). I was using coconut milk but it gives me heartburn. I've switched to making my own almond milk but I know almonds aren't "ideal", maybe next I'll try macadamia. Let's put together a definitive guide to milk alternatives, pros and cons of each (without getting overly sciencey).

Check Chris Kessler's latest post on coconut milk. You possibly may have a FODMAP issue. http://thehealthyskeptic.org/3-reasons-why-coconut-milk-may-not-be-your-friend

I made my own almond milk, the box brands of any milk alternative all have too many weird ingredients. Why should milk alternatives have anything but two ingredients, the nut (or whatever) and water?

Yes it is organic coconut milk, that is the only ingredient

Upvoted because of that post you made in which you said that you like to take a toke before bed. That was a long time ago and I forgot to upvote you then, so I am doing it now.

if you dont do well with coconut milk why not just give up milk substitutes? Its not like you eat cereal anymore and need something to pour over it

I like Hemp Butter...the kind they put in brownies and other edibles. Well, Almond and Hemp milk are going to have way too many PUFAs. I have never heard of Macadamia Nut Milk but it should be better, seeing as it is primarily MUFA and SF.

Check that your coconut milk brand is 100% coconut milk (and maybe some water) with no other additives.

It seems that most people seem to have issues with the additives rather than the coconut milk itself.

I loves me my smoothies. I do the almond milk from Trader's and the Rice Milk. While some paleo folks don't like the rice it's not totally verboten. We have no heartburn or bad poo-poo's from either. Haven't seen hemp milk around here (surprise because we're like the marijuana capital - NorCal) so I can't speak to that type of milk.
