Hello - I am on a methadone maintainance program and take methadone everytday.  Methadone is stored in your fat cells and since while on the Keto or Paleo Diet you burn fat for energy I'm wondering if this will affect my body and make me have withdraw symptoms.  Please let me know if you have any information or experience on this subject.

Hey! I see this is old but I can answer. I've been on keto diet off and on for years due to an on going seizure disorder that is medication resistant. You're right , methadone is stored in your fat and you're burning fat on keto. For me that meant my dose hits me super hard in the morning after I take it at 5am, then I'm sick by 4pm. I fixed this problem by working with my clinic to get my dose raised and split into two daily doses, and this has worked amazingly. I am no longer getting super high on accident on my methadone and I no longer get sick throughout the day .It keeps my blood levels normalized. I love the keto diet and it has helped heal neurological damage caused by starting iv heroin at the age of 13 and continuing non stop with the addition of speed, for 10 years. Now I am clean and my brain is healing, and keto has helped that as well as stop my seizures that previously needed emergency treatment with a strong benzo in the hospital .
