[META] Why not give rep for upvotes on comments?

Answered on August 19, 2014

My favorite aspect of this site is the informed debate that goes on here. Because of the format of the site, most of this goes on in the comments to a question or answer, as it would be difficult to follow the thread of differently voted answers. Many of my favorite answers on this site can be found in the comments, but the current system isn't set up well to reward well stated points in a debate.

If we want to encourage dialogue, debate, and commenting, why not give rep on upvotes on comments? Tied, of course, to the daily limit.

You should check out Stack Overflow, the original stack exchange website. They're all obsessed with reputation. Compared to them we're blissfully oblivious.

It looks like a demonically-possessed stress ball is about to jump out from my computer screen and bite off my nose, all whilst laughing manically. But maybe that's just me; that thing is part Rorschach test, part pure nightmare fuel.

What's "rep"? But I love using the comment section as opposed to the answer section so I suppose getting rep for that would be good

It could be even more fruitful. We'd draw in the rep seekers and change what rep means on the site, to some degree, from good question posers and answerers to good debaters.

I don't feel like discussion in the comments needs to be encouraged. It's already pretty darn fruitful. If someone cares about/ wants rep points they'll post an answer.

1 single point for each comment upvote would be kinda cool.

making them retroactive would be another level of coolness.

I sort of see a benefit to the current system's incentives for posting as an answer instead of as a comment. It rewards phrasing things as separate thoughts related to the question instead of a self referential discussion. Discussions are nice, but they can be hard to follow and it is good that they are sort of limited to comments.
