[Meta] Should a new reason be added for closing a question?

Answered on September 12, 2014
Created January 10, 2013 at 7:05 PM

Today, I had my first question closed:

http://paleohacks.com/questions/172250/meta-do-paleos-troll-on-vegan-vegetarian-boards

I don't think I'm bitter over it, but it has made me think. Should we just add a reason for closure that is "I don't like the question"? And honestly, I think that's a fine reason. If 5 people with 3000+ rep points don't like a question, they can close it. Of course, if 5 others with 3000+ do like it, they can re-open.

Forcing people to pick only from the list of given reasons can drive confusion. Sometimes I think people are forced to choose a reason that doesn't fit and that leaves OP debating (often with himself/herself) as to why the question was considered to be [insert reason].

Now I'm wondering what reason will be given to close this question. :)

That would be an interesting twist of fate, though I would prefer "douchebaggery"

Mike, since your first question has been re-opened, should we close this one as being "no longer relevant"?

the [meta] notation comes from stackoverflow. The idea is that you are asking a question about how the site works, identified bugs, new features, or suggestions for improving the community. It became burdensome so stackoverflow implemented http://meta.stackoverflow.com/. This led to many of the stackexchange sites to do the same and create a separate site for meta questions. Patrik has not decided to do that with paleohacks, so people post those questions with the [meta] notation as regular questions.

Like the vegan's question that prompted yours...I actually voted that closed. Basically as spam, redundant, and not a real question all rolled into one.

That's a good question. To me it's a question that isn't directly related to paleo, but more related to this forum. Though, I haven't seen it defined anywhere.

couldn't you just make the reason, "trolling the forum", then? I mean if you feel it's not on the list of topics then it would be, therefore, trolling, not "because I don't like it".

@CD - I don't believe meta questions should be closed. What I'm asking is if you are strictly the following criteria you listed above, then how do you decide which meta questions to vote to close? Just the ones you don't like, right? Because I'm sure very few if any meet your criteria above.

I'm not going to vote to close your question CD, look its all good man, I'm just saying that maybe there's a significant amount of people here who have gone a little drunk with closing power. IMO if it's an honest question that in some way could be correlated with encouraging people to further their paleo knowledge then I leave it be. I'm just saying maybe we are being a little power hungry and I really want to emphasize I'm not in any way attacking or disagreeing with you cd, you earned the right to close whatever you see fit and that's perfectly warranted, I'm just voicing my pov dude.

That's true but why care if it isn't strictly within some loose rules somebody wrote two years ago? @cd, your question "no more meatless Mondays!!!" doesn't really fit into those rules either, but I mean, meat is paleo, so who cares, lol. Mike was just referencing paleo trolls, if they exist and what they are like. It's not just any trolls, but paleo trolls, IMO it seems excessive to close that ( not saying you did) unless maybe you're offended by trolls, idk. I think if we loosened up a little we'd have more productive threads. Maybe I'm wrong though, maybe it'd be anarchy, idk. (srs)

Or we could raise the closing threshold to 10k or something. That would cut the amount of people who can close into less than 20% of what it is now.

Closed due to douchebaggery should be an option. I'd also settle for and "are you F'n kidding me use the search function!" option.

Two thoughts

  1. I don't think that "I don't like the question" is a good reason to close a question

  2. The question in question was off topic, in my opinion. And was closed for that reason.

From the FAQ: related to Paleolithic and/or Primal diet, exercise and lifestyle, which includes subjects like CrossFit Cholesterol and blood testing Sensitivities and allergies to gluten and other substances Supplements like Vitamin D, fish oil etc etc
