[meta] Hold up--now there are ads in the MIDDLE of the thread?!

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created June 07, 2012 at 3:42 AM

Is it just me or are there now ads in the middle of the page? The ads at the top and sides of the page, I can handle; but now it's just obnoxious having it smack dab in the middle of the thread.

Also consider Do Not Track Plus -- http://abine.com/dntdetail.php This extension blocks companies from tracking you, and tells you who's trying to track you. On this PH page, there are 10(!) companies trying to track me. This is the best browser extension ever!

http://abine.com/dntdetail.php. Even better is a combo of: Chrome + AdBlock + Do Not Track Plus. DNTP blocks tracking info and tells you who is trying to track you. On this PH page, it shows a total of 10(!) companies trying to track me. Seriously, this is the best add-on on the planet.

I know that on some sites, the ads don't pay anything unless the person clicking through actualy buys something.

Running a page costs money, and you only get paid when people click an ad. You have no real control over what is displayed (the ad service pulls keywords from the page and tries to guess at what the readers are interested in based on that, and other stuff pulled from cookies). I like to open ads in a background tab, let them hang out for a min or two, then close them unviewed. It's my way of supporting the site operator (cause they get a buck or so per click) and sticking it to the man (the company has to pay the ad service each time they get a hit).

Mike, they only make money off clicks, not views. As someone who doesn't click on ads even if they were present, ads are a waste of bandwidth and eyesore. Therefore I use Adblock Plus.

Out of respect for content creators, I don't run adblock. They need to make money, and if I'm accepting their service for free, it seems like it's the least I can do. However, I do find the huge ads mid-thread to be over-kill and I'm seriously considering installing it.

Yup, I use AdBlock in Firefox. I usually white-list sites with unobtrusive advertisements to support them (and the AdBlock team is actually doing the same thing) but if they are obnoxious, like placing ads in the middle of forum threads, I will not unblock them. :P

Really? So now we're going to complain because someone is trying to earn a living off something they created? It may/may not cost a lot to host the site, but that doesn't mean the site owner doesn't have a mortgage to pay.

Yeah. I'm not sure what's the point in soo many ads.. It's not like it is that costly to host the site and it's basically ran by the community.

Not too hard to create your own since it's basically just at template from stack exchange.

Ads suck and I can put up with them. But really not in the middle of the page. Is it enough to make me leave Paleohacks? No. But I don't like it. If it causes me to use adblock, and causes others to use adblock then it is pointless because the ads won't load and there will not be revenue coming in. And then the other ads on the side of the page will be blocked as well. So I guess it depends on whether the owner makes more money with the ads in the middle of the page. I would say that he would, even if 20% of regular visitors install adblock, there is probably enough random traffic that this is making enough money to justify obnoxious advertisements.
