I've noticed a few posts with downvotes that look like they got downvoted for a difference of opinion. I can understand downvoting an answer or question because they're spamming or trolling or just making stupid jokes, but I see some people here actively trying to participate getting downvotes. This is a community and a bunch of individuals and I try to respect that, so I'm wondering if I misunderstood the purpose.
Is the downvote to punish people we think are presenting wrong information as well as those that we think are violating terms? or is it just one or the other?

Who knows. I primarily use downvotes when someone is giving blatantly wrong advice that could be hurtful. I rarely downvote for violating terms because that's just a waste of time.
I think a lot of people use downvotes out of spite, which is funny that people care so much.
My favorites are when you get downvotes on opinion questions (like I did on the what are your favorite foods per macro question). How the hell can you downvote someone on that question?
At the end of the day, the downvotes do not help deter any behavior because it's only -2. So why bother.

I only downvote answers if they contain wrong or harmful information. I know, we all have different opinions on what is wrong, but that's what I go by.
I have not downvoted anyone for violating terms (I just vote to close the questions) or if my opinion is different.
I am not sure if there are any strict rules to downvoting questions/answers. If there are any, I am unaware of them. I guess it is free for all?
Oh, and shame on those who downvoted my perfect hourglass figure. Do you know how many figures I had to go through to find that one? And some of them were banana shaped!

Hi! I have accidentally downvoted a few times. When I'm reading on my phone, and I have "load images" unticked, to save data, I can't see the little arrows! I don't know I've hit it until it's already counted, and I don't know how to retract it. Even with the images loading it's very hard to scroll without hitting something. Maybe if there was a "confirm vote" button it would resolve it. That might also help with people who aren't that interested in keeping this site good from random voting.
