How to make PaleoHacks.com better?

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created February 27, 2010 at 11:50 PM

UPDATE: Per Glenn's comment below, I have now created a form where you can submit your favorite Paleo resource and I will collate all the responses and list them on this site.

Submit your Paleo resources here!.

Hi there,

I am Patrik, the Paleo enthusiast who maintains PaleoHacks.com. I'd love to know what you, as a user, might have as far as suggestions on what PaleoHacks.com might become to be more useful to you.

Right now, I like the StackExchange platform, but there are interesting Q&A platforms out there as well. So, please don't hold back:

  • Any and all ideas on features and functionality.
  • Site aesthetics.

Also, any ideas on how to better promote PaleoHacks would be much appreciated. Aside from answering or commenting below. You can always reach out to me personally at my first name @ this domain (if I don't answer your email it is only because I am busy with my day-job and/or traveling).

Thanks in advance.

Before I forget, for the socially media minded amongst you, I disabled AddThis for questions as it didn't look as if people were using it. Should I enable Digg or Reddit? Let me know your thoughts.

Just FYI, the form has the Twitter name as "required" which isn't applicable for a lot of resources.

Personally, I'd be happy with black letters on a white page, as at stackoverflow.com. The colors of the other objects on the page aren't as important. If not black, then maybe just something much more saturated. The light blue for the comments here is particularly difficult to read.

I'm a fan of the Stack Exchange platform -- great idea to use it for a Paleo-oriented Q&A site.

My only feedback for you at the moment is that I find the colors to a be a little difficult to read. I would prefer something that's higher contrast.

Open ID support for login? I'm getting very fond of that, not having a username and PW for every single site in the world.

Along with the list of online info resources, what about a list of helpful products?

For example: some of the better grass-fed beef sites, where to buy Vitamin D3 and K2, etc.

I'll start off...

www.eatwild.com/ -- great source of paleo-friendly meat.

For D3 I like the product from strength coach Charles Poliquin. It's a bit expensive, but you get a lot per pill--5000IU!--and it's in an oil-based gel cap, so you can take it any time. (D3 is fat soluble, so if you take a dry-powder tablet on an empty stomach it won't be absorbed by your body.) Here's the link: http://us.cpoliquin.com/product_p/d3%20excellence.htm=Click246

Good stainless steel water bottles: http://www.kleankanteen.com/

Here's Stephan's recommendation for K2: http://www.greenpasture.org/retail/?t=products&p=products&a=display&i=1000

Who else has suggestions?

I would like to see people put more thought into their questions. Instead of "Is [x] paleo?" which begs yes/no/maybe answers I'd prefer questions like "What [evidence/studies/experts] support using [x] in a paleo diet or exercise plan?" This would (hopefully) prompt people to find quotes, links, book titles or other resources to recommend.

Opinions vary widely and, as someone who is looking to figure out what food (and other) choices work best for me, I value the variety. However, I give more credence to those that are explained clearly and succinctly.

To these ends, I'd like the site to have a posting guide and urge those posting a question to search the already-extensive list of questions to avoid duplicates (and the inevitable RTFM posts that will make the site seem unfriendly to newcomers).

A glossary of terminology would be nice, too. For instance, if there were entries for "pastured" - meaning "raised and fed in a pasture" - and "pasteurized" - meaning "heated to kill bacteria" we might not end up with confusing words like "pasteured" which means... nothing, as far as I can tell.

Thanks for asking. Some of this stuff has been bugging me for several days.

What about a blogroll for the best paleo info sites, like Richard, Kurt, Stephan, etc.?

I always wanted a human metabolic "wiki like thing" where one could define terms and explain the various human metabolic topics in one place. We have all these great blogs and books teaching us the various parts of this, but I feel like the knowledge is too fracture and incomplete in places. It would be great to have it in one place, with common sense tips mixed in for the beginners. I have some vague ideas on how I'd like it done, but I don't feel like expanding on it right now.

I am not a computer guru at all, but a retired person who plays around on the computer.

What I like about PaleoHacks is that it has been easy for me to navigate the site. It has a lot of useful information, with knowledgable people posting replies to well thought out questions.

Linking questions to Twitter should promote the site fairly quickly due to curiosity of people coming across the links.

I don't know much about Digg and Reddit- by posting this question on Twitter for experts to answer you will probably get feedback.

A list of all the silly abbreviations people use, (MCT, WOW, HIIT....) maybe in a "new to paleohacks" short introduction paragraph explaining things.
