feedback or requests (for adjustments etc) following PH web site upgrade

Commented on October 04, 2013
Created September 08, 2013 at 10:32 AM

(i love change, keeps me on my toes).

Just thought some kind of post-PH-site-upgrade thread may be warranted to alert the admins of bugs & make requests for possible adjustments etc...

Here's my one,

Under the All Questions page (Active option selected), can we stop comments from bringing a question to the top of the list. Comments occur too often & quickly bump questions down the order & off the first page..........Edit 16Sept13......not bothered by this now, don't mind either way

i feel your pain @BobK. i can now see 3 of your comments (at the time i type this), so may be some/all of your comments did go through

of course (i think?) the @username thing only works if you have email notifications enabled, which a lot of people have probably switched off (i know i have). (i do get emails for this post tho, as i am 'following' it)

I agree.. something like "Type Question Summary Here" and then a "Question Summary Tips" box. The current tips are more applicable the "body / details" of the question.

Using the same language in the ""Type Question Summary Here" & ""Question Summary Tips" helps create clarity

Hint: You can notify a user about this post by typing @username anywhere in the body of an anwer or comment <<<< add this to clarify the use of @username.

It appears that one can "Like" a comment or down vote a comment.... nice, mixed symbolics.

But only one can Like an answer? From all the admin / developer traffic.... it appears that the ability to down vote an answer will be restored.

This is supposed send a message to Matt11? @Matt11

It hurts my eyes. Really. Much more than any other website ever.

You really should have sorted the branding before you launched the new site, the double "lack of familiarity" thing is going to kill traffic.

The fact that daz refers to the "little roundish icon in the top r/h corner of your answer" reinforces the fact that the icon is not very meaningful or memorable. And small....

I would agree with vademecum. & thhq. The old color scheme was fine and had a "paleo" feel. The new 'sky blue'? not so much.

I would offer "if it ain't broke" don't fix it. What was motivation for the 'functional' changes? I understand the need to change platforms but not look of the site. What "didn't work" ?

Hi there. We build the software that powers this site now and are working with the owners to make sure that the personalized style and certain missing features are restored. They needed to move off the old system quickly and we helped them and are now working to help them get it back to a personalized view.

clear up the ambiguity in the "Ask a Question" form...

in the box beneath the 'Your Question' heading it reads 'Type your question here...'

& some people have been doing exactly that...typing their whole question in to this box,

Could you please change the text in that box to read 'Type the title of your question here...', or something similar.

& the text that appears in the 'Title Tips' popup on the right, are tips that are applicable more to the question details box than the title box.

cheers

@dzone

A few things I would like:

  • to be able to change my user name
  • to be able to see my name with points at the top of the page instead of having to go to my profile
  • to reorder answers chronologically instead of by number of votes
  • an explanation of which badges are which color
  • a FAQ page

It's apparent that you all have done a lot of hard work here in switching to the new platform. Kudos and looking forword to all the new changes.

Hey everyone,

Regarding the design & functionality, thanks so much for the feedback. The design as it stands is not going to be our permanent design. The color scheme will be going back to the old one, and we will be addressing all the functionality issues as well. We are doing everything we can to make sure that using this site is an amazing experience for you.

Thanks for all the feedback!! Please keep it coming if you run into any errors.

Another couple of nice-to-haves from me,

  • Would be nice to be able to edit the username (accepting that no duplicate names allowed). This would also allow users with numbers after their new usernames to modify them if they wish
  • Has the FAQ/Help/Rules page or pages gone? can we get them back

And,

  • *Can we get 'alerts' again (on the web page, rather than emails). ie the old system had an 'envelope' icon, sort of like a 'you have mail' alert, to let you know someone had answered or commented on your question....etc
  • Can we get the activity under the 'Meta space' to show up on the "All Questions" page again (like it was initially after the cut-over)
  • can we get the 'rollback' feature for edits (Revisions)?

* thx wtfgod for that one

Major hates:

  • I can't log in, comment, or reply via mobile.
  • The comment/like bar is ambiguous - when scrolling through many answers, it is sometimes hard to tell if the correct bar is above or below the answer.
  • Is there another place where we can see recent/reputation/etc as easily as the tabs on the old site?

Also annoying:

  • Harder to see reputation points.
  • Harder to see up/dovwnvotes on comments.
  • I liked the downvote option.
  • Color scheme is very generic (but this has been addressed.)

Maybe this is just me, but I feel really "scatterbrained" looking at the new design. There's so much going on, and so many little visual things all over the page. It takes a lot more mental energy just to figure out what's going on and work through the clutter to get to the actual questions and answers. Definitely preferred the old color scheme, even with the big brown bar.

It would be nice to have a "Old vs New" FAQs.

I.E. For example,

In the old system, you clicked on "Questions" to see only the most recent asked questions. In the new system you....

In the old system you clicked "reputation" to see where you had plus ups or minuses. In the new system you...

I'm very very happy that the big brown bar that would hover and eat up 1/3rd of the vertical real estate is gone. Good riddens. Please DO NOT bring that atrocity back.

Color wise, I'm fine with the current generic color scheme, but the old brown one was fine too. Don't care much either way. Usability is more important to me.

There's something wrong with the reputation counts. Yesterday I started at 150, later it was restored to 15.7, and this morning it's back down to 192. It's not working properly.

We need a downvote button, or if there's a way to downvote, pls let us know how.

That's all I have.

I'm not going to criticize the new layout too much, per se. I'm sure it has many subtle advantages that, I as a user, do not see. However, the owner might want to restore the lost features and the color scheme as much as possible. But I know such changes can be very difficult and time-consuming, so I am merely whining without pressing.

Just sayin' without a personality, this website is in danger of falling off the map into the anonymous ocean of cheap-looking generic bulletin boards. IT LOOKS SO GENERIC, SO DIME-A-DOZEN.

I love change for the better. I do not love change for the worse.

Should've kept the old color scheme. That was the Paleohacks brand. Gave a nice, warm California-ish feel. This new scheme has no soul. Never mind the countless good things that made the original design so popular a website, that have been lost.
