@Patrik : I got suspended today. Just wondered why? I'm okay with it, but I'd like to know what the reason was...

I just say this, but I wanted to thank you for it. "In short, we all complain here that most every conventional doctor we know thinks they have all the same answers. Dr. K/The Quilt seems to take the same attitude, just with a different approach." That is such a good summary of my problem with him. It shows a sort of fundamental lack of respect for the other people here.

Patrik, I totally respect your decision to do what you want on your site, and no you don't necessarily owe anyone an explanation, however if I'm honest reading through the post it did seem like a knee jerk reaction, was it maybe a long time coming? Just seems a little harsh for what was said. I'm not saying suspending him was wrong, but it's left me a little worried that I'm going to maybe say the wrong thing and get suspended one day?

Totally. Unfortunately, there is a natural attraction to those who claim to be able to show you the truth. Some of the coolest things I've learned from paleohacks have been cooking tips, the history of agriculture, how people people react to different diet modifications, and in general things totally unrelated to the absolute optimum diet or the ultimate biochemical pathway. Paleohacks provides fertile ground for self-experimentation ideas, and keeps you excited about learning. Good stuff, but it's so not one-size-fits-all! (well, some-sizes-fit-most maybe)

I agree, Kamal, and I also get frustrated by anyone here or anywhere else who tries to shove a "one size fits all" approach to diet. We all come from a lot of different long-standing regions. It's been a very, very long time since I've believed that there is one diet that is right for everyone, and I tend to steer away from anyone in this life who thinks they have it all figured out. None of us do. Maybe the best we can each do is figure out what seems the most logical and beneficial for our own life.

Wow, that was quite the lucid post. I must wholeheartedly agree with your first paragraph. The government contracts 13 Evidence-based Practice Centers in the US to synthesize and critique studies on medical topics. I am a peon working at one of them. The stats issues, study design issues, and meta-analytical issues are so complex that we hired two medical editors to word things carefully. That is why blanket statements and authoritative proclamations sound so silly to me. Evidence-based medicine isn't the final word, and N=1 or N=50 personal experience also isn't.

And by the way, my problem is not at all that you would have deleted that particular thread. It was definitely not a question and completely off-topic. I think everybody (including you) understood that it was an extraordinary and delicate situation in dealing with a young person who appeared to be in pain.

So nobody is calling into question "your right" to do this (at least, I am not). However, some of us (I don't think I am alone...maybe I am) just don't understand what policy was broken and how the Quilt's actions constitute that break.

Oh, I agree with you that everybody should be treated the same. However, unless something was deleted that I did not see, I don't understand the policy that the Quilt is guilty of breaking. Your action *appears* to me to be arbitrary, however, as I have mentioned, maybe parts of the discussion were deleted that I didn't see. Or maybe I don't understand the policy in question. I understand that being rude is against policy. I just don't see that the Quilt was that rude.

@ThomasSeay -- it is not about me being King. It is about people who don't like my policies (which is perfectly okay) to not spend their time one PaleoHacks. That's it. The banner is me advertising that I treat everyone the same. That was OP's complaint - that I dare suspend a popular user of PH.

@Thomas -- what I left up for the community to see (I suspended a popular member and I treat everyone the same) is entirely different than you asking why so-and-so got suspended. Those are two different discussions, and only the former makes sense for Paleohacks.

Alfredo should not have called Patrik a "douche". However, it appears that there can be no discussion of this topic. It all ends with one statement, "Patrik is the Boss around here." Nobody has argued against that. Patrik is the person who put this thread up as a banner. Surely, he did that for a reason. Or am I not supposed to ask why he did that, because, after all, he is "the boss around here". My questions about this have been posed in a civil manner and I would expect a more civil response. Instead all I am hearing is, "it's good to be the king".

I stole that line, and use it everywhere! Sometimes I'll be on a date, and the girl will say she has a cat. I'll listen intently "uh huh...oh, that's interesting...tell me more". Then when she's done talking, I squint my eyes, tilt my head, and point my finger at her "Hey, I don't suppose your cat's name is Chairman Meow?" Then I start laughing, and if she isn't at least smiling, the date is effectively over. Anyway, back to regularly scheduled argumentation...

Patrik doesn't appear to distinguish between super-posters and regular Joes when employing the right hand of doom. Someone I know well (ahem...me) was suspended in the distant past. Maybe The Quilt deleted the comment in question, but his comments on that thread seem pretty useful and well-intentioned to me, albeit expressed in his potentially grating no-room-for-potential-disagreement-with-my-pronouncements, style.

It is my peeve and not Patrik's but I hate it when comments are deleted in a way that makes the flow no longer make sense or when reasonably questioned. The Quilt has done both. Given that contrast flack about leaving a questionable thread open would have been more than enough to set me off.

Got to agree with Anonymous Coward on this one. Patrik, you can do what you want to, but I personally don't see anything so rude about what the Quilt said. Perhaps there was some prehistory to this that I don't know about. I know there are people up here who don't like the Quilt. However what was so offensive about what he said? He questioned you for considering deleting a thread. He did not curse. He did not threaten. He did not call you a bad name.

I have unlocked and undeleted the question as this is, surprisingly, a good question. Who do I think I am? And how dare I suspend The Quilt/Dr.K from PaleoHacks? The nerve of me.

Let me answer both of those so that is crystal-clear.

I own and maintain the site. I am the Prime Mover for PaleoHacks. With the help of my sub-moderators, I set the tone and I control the flow. This is my prerogative. If you do not like how I run things -- which is entirely fair -- then you should not frequent PaleoHacks.

I dare suspend The Quilt/Dr.K from PaleoHacks b/c I also don't suffer from hero-worship --- and will take disciplinary action (suspension, deletion) against ANYONE on the site, no matter how rabid of a following they have, if/when theyviolate the Paleohacks community standards as listed in the FAQ and as manifested organically by the community.

Let me highlight, I treat all PaleoHackers, popular & unpopular, in the exact same manner.

PS comparing lil ol' me to Hitler is a serious insult, not to me, but to all those and their families who suffered at his hands. You should be ashamed of saying something so stupid.

PPS I have no obligation to explain why I moderate like I do. Tough. C'est la vie. If you don't like how I do it -- I repeat, go elsewhere like: http://cavemanforum.com/

PPPS some of you are missing the point:

The point is NOT that I am dictator-jerk (which I am and which is, incidentally, the opposite of a philosopher-king) but that, again, I repeat:

1) I will treat everyone the same via the standards as defined on the FAQ.

2) If you don't like it here -- don't insult me or others -- just stop frequenting PaleoHacks. Simple solution.

Well, I have no idea what happened, but I have to say that many of Dr. K/The Quilts posts made me uncomfortable, like he was trying to start a cult with him as the lead guru, mostly without citing research literature to back up many of the claims he made. Now he does appear to be a doctor, but research gets put into controlled circumstance and is, in best cases, monitored closely and includes control groups. A lot of statistics are involved, including running stats to see if the stats are good enough to consider as significantly different from the control (called P values in stats). Otherwise, just saying "I tell my patients to do x and they come back and x" is just anecdotal, and not scientific research.

Some of it came off as megalomaniacal, although not willfully bad intentioned.

Sometimes his wording was very authoritative, without evidence (and I read his blog and found a lot of it going around in circles there) but I also saw people begging for his help (sometimes it's comforting to feel as tho an authority, or someone in the know is close by???) so I actually felt very uncomfortable challenging it.

In short, we all complain here that most every conventional doctor we know thinks they have all the same answers. Dr. K/The Quilt seems to take the same attitude, just with a different approach.

What's worse, I feel like the absolute, tribe leader reverence that got bestowed upon him thanks to his authoritative tone meant that few were willing to challenge him or take him to the task of getting down to the science of his conclusion. Many of his posts promised to do that, but here or at the blog, they just made affirmations without backing them up. Each post would start to seem like it did, then I'd realize I was almost to the end of the post and the question he said he would answer hadn't been answered and some other tangent was being entertained.

Now, none of that is exactly egregious behavior, I guess, but it's hardly useful.

And now, I'm finally glad to have that off my chest, because I felt like I had been biting my typing fingers on way too many of his posts.

Totally. Unfortunately, there is a natural attraction to those who claim to be able to show you the truth. Some of the coolest things I've learned from paleohacks have been cooking tips, the history of agriculture, how people different people react to different diet modifications, and in general things totally unrelated to the absolute optimum diet or the ultimate biochemical pathway. Paleohacks provides fertile ground for self-experimentation ideas, and keeps you excited about learning. Good stuff, but I hope newbies can separate the wheat from the chaffe. It's not one-size-fits-all!

I don't know what Dr. K has done to deserve it, but if the moderator of any site thinks someone has gone too far, he has the fullest right to ban (or, as in this case, temporarily suspend) this person.

Furthermore, I see very little reason to have a name like 'Patriks A Fag' and am not sure what you're trying to reach with childish insults like that.

If you like the 'Caveman Forum' better, then go there and don't bother us with these non-questions. Or set up your own site and suspend Patrik from it, everybody happy.

One simple question. Why was The Quilt suspended? I don't get it. He's been a very supportive member of this community recently, and I think he has a lot to offer. Yes, it's Patrik's "site" and he can do things by fiat if he likes, however, I'd still like to know.

Kinda difficult to form an opinion if The Quilt deleted something and if he has in the past then that makes me lose respect for him. I will say that it was a stretch for that question to remain up. I answered it b/c it was so sad but the dude who asked it started posting really random stuff and I began to wonder if the dude was just a troller.

It is my peeve and not Patrik's but I hate it when comments are deleted in a way that makes the flow no longer make sense or when reasonably questioned. The Quilt has done both. Given that contrast flack about leaving a questionable thread open would have been more than enough to set me off.

Your action *appears* to me to be arbitrary, however, as I have mentioned, maybe parts of the discussion were deleted that I didn't see. Or maybe I don't understand the policy in question. I understand that being rude is against policy. I just don't see that the Quilt was that rude.
