Quick menu question....

Okay so I am doing Paleo for weightloss purposes...and have been succeeding. I've decided since I don't want to get into the same eating routine that I would change up my menu a bit....so my question today is about lunch...today I had a half of a bag of fresh express romain salad, with a can of Starks tuna in water...with a half of an avocado and about 8 grape tomatos. I used extra virgin olive oil, a decent amount and trader joes balsamic vinegar..a decent amount....satellite me this is this a good Paleo breakfast/lunch meal if my goal is to lose weight? If not, can you please tell what I should or shouldn't be doing? Many thanks! Big blue

I think this is a good method for someone starting out, but if you start to stall it's always good to start tracking to see what could be hurting your progress. Some people (ahem, me) have trouble with their body telling them when to stop and numerical data can help.

Absolutely correct. If one eats the right foods, counting calories doesn't matter much, the body does a mighty fine job of auto regulation.

I honestly wouldn't worry about counting calories. That's so much hassle with very minimal reward. Plus, maintenance calories varies based on what types of foods you eat.

I tend to disagree with the wean-off method. cold-turkey, detox is the easiest and most straight forward method.

The problem, or conversely the benefit, is that your body does not need to rely on a foreign substance to perform functionally. Caffeine is a powerful drug that you build up a psychological tolerance to -- but not as significant physiological tolerance. That is to say that you don't feel the effect to your brain -- but your body continues to respond. Thus you end up drinking more coffee to get the mental affect. Too much caffeine leads to problems.

You don't have to go down to none, anything in the ballpark of 18 ounces will probably be fine. However, since you do have AFIB, you might want to be attentive to any improvements. There is a possibility that you caffeine consumption might have something to do with it, see here: http://www.webmd.com/heart/atrial-fibrillation-stroke-11/causes-and-risks, notice that caffeine is mentioned several times as it might be implicated in your condition.

@cdone....I am all for a challenge, but before I commit to making myself feel miserable for a week, please tell me the benefits I will experience? How about I start by going down to 16 oz...then 8 oz...then a week without any.....need to ease my way off...

A serving of coffee is 6oz. So you are drinking 5 cups of coffee to get you going. I love my coffee, 30oz is a lot! I challenge you to go a week without caffeine -- I do this every 4 months or so. As soon as I feel like I cannot wake up without a coffee. It will change your life -- suddenly 8oz of coffee gets you wired.

You consume 30 ounces of coffee in one go? Good grief that's almost 4 cups worth. Do you experience tachycardia symptoms shortly thereafter?

What's the deal with fresh express? Buy a few different heads of lettuce and chop them up...

Do you get Hass avocados? I could eat 2 of those in one go. Now if you get the Florida type avocados, then that's a different story. Those are the ones I'm used to since I'm here in Miami, Florida. We get the huge avocados that weigh like 2 pounds each, good luck eating that in one go lol.

I don't get how people are eating HALF an avocado? Maybe the ones I buy are just smaller because I always eat the whole thing. Well, except today I had half because I had to share it with my Dad!

No actually you won't even have to cut off the part that was touched by the citrus, it has virtually zero impact on the flavor. Specially if you intend to use it in shakes or puddings, it will be impossible to tell.

yeah, I've head of that...if you cut off the part the citrus touched, will the rest taste of it? I typically only use avocados in shakes and puddings

It was a bit tongue & cheek of a question. I know the acid trick but something about it being chilled and then brought back to room temp ruins it for me. Same with guacamole, I only like it freshly made. Some things work better after fridge time (chili) but not avocados.

Lemon juice solves this problem. It only goes bad because once the flesh is exposed to air it oxidizes quickly. Rub the exposed flesh with a lemon/lime before placing back in the fridge and the ascorbic acid and citric acid in the lime will prevent the avocado from turning ugly and brown. This is also the reason why lime juice is added to guacamole, not just flavor but also for preservation purposes. Homemade guacamole is a great way to eat avocado and preserve remainders for later. Avocado, lime/lemon juice, salt, tomato, red onion (optional), cilantro (optional), and spices (optional).

yes, the avocado problem. I've stopped buying them because of all the anxiety (is it still good? it went bad! what about this half? $$$ in the trash again.) I have seen avocado savers online, though

First of all..THANKS!!!! I feel good that the meal is Paleo friendly! I love that salad meal...and the 1/2 avocado is a new addition which I love as well!!! so this is what i eat at say 1 o'clock..after going to the gym and doing some heavy weight training...prior to going I have 30 ounces of black coffee with two tablespoons of trader joes coconut oil...(still good?) at about 3:30 I will have a hardboiled egg....dinner will either be a steak with kerrygold butter and some sauteed spinach or a piece of salmon with butter and spinach....So do you still think if I eat like this I will lose weight? I am down 16 lbs and currently weigh 274. I am 6'2.

What do people do with the other half of the Avocado? I always wonder about that because they turn brown and ugly if I try to save them.

In the context presented the meal sounds fine but we can only judge it knowing what else you normally eat. I'd still be hungry after eating that meal and would be looking to down 500 calories of almond butter or similar an hour later. So what is your total caloric intake vs. what you need to sustain weight or lose some?

Your salad sounds awesome. It is perfectly Paleo and quite nutritious. You will definitely lose weight eating like that. Tuna, leafy greens, tomatoes, avocado, and olive oil are all great choices.

It would be better to have a Protein with salad and use acv and olive oil as a dressing with a fat source such as avocados/nuts (23 almonds)/ or good oils 1-2 tbsp of avocado oil/olive oil/macdamaia oil etc.
