Melatonin isnt needed per se. Its required for a healthier sleep, for a natural cirdacian rythmn, and for dreaming, but you can sleep without it. If your overtired your body gets loaded with the endocannabiniod oleamide, which makes you spacey and tired. That will put you to sleep, well after the melatonin has stopped triggering.
