What's the deal with cooking over an open fire?

Has anyone tried to roast there meat over a fire put in the backyard? It seems like a fun event, obviously not thinking of doing it that often, but does anyone have any clue on the legality of it and or how to go about doing it? Or what cuts of meat/ animals to use?

I would guess that legality would depend on your municipality. My colleague, who's 40 like me, grew up with a Cuban immigrant father who'd host pig roasts where he'd dig a hole in the backyard, fill it with hot coals, and then put the pig on top. Because of our age, I'd guess these were happening in the 70s and 80s.

In the present, I'm sure you could get away with something that was similar to a fire pit that people buy at Home Depot. Sounds like a fun experiment.

I would think that a google search would turn up lots of hits if you search for campfire cooking!
