Vegetarians smell better?

Answered on September 12, 2014

http://chemse.oxfordjournals.org/content/31/8/747.full

"Results of repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the odor of donors when on the nonmeat diet was judged as significantly more attractive, more pleasant, and less intense. This suggests that red meat consumption has a negative impact on perceived body odor hedonicity. "

Opinions?

True dat- my boyfriend's family is old school Frenchie, and after dating for a year my boyfriend politely asked me to stop using deodorant as it ruined my smell. People like different things!

This is funny, because I always notice my boyfriend stinks when he sweats after eating lots of dairy- kind of musty. Also, I had a friend who ate tons of those dried mango crap snacks with a ton of nitrates in them, and she smelled so weird. Weird, nitrate smell.

Right, the Hazda think that body odor is attractive, although obviously recognize that it is more sanitary to wash frequently "While Hadza have a word for body odor, the men tell me that they prefer their women not to bathe—the longer they go between baths, they say, the more attractive they are." http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/print/2009/12/hadza/finkel-text So you're either living with a culture that lauds body odor or you are living in one where suppressing it is good for business, and in that case we all wash or become pariahs so it becomes moot.

Very true, some people find it crazy that smelling like something could be considered attractive, but just how much of that is the product of propaganda. The Hazda don't think so "While Hadza have a word for body odor, the men tell me that they prefer their women not to bathe—the longer they go between baths, they say, the more attractive they are." http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/print/2009/12/hadza/finkel-text But we all wash and use deodorant here so it's kind of moot.

One thing that may have sounded like a good idea but also could confound things is that "For the second stage, they were provided with nonperfumed soap (Sara Lee Household & Body Care, Stockholm, Sweden) and were asked to avoid exaggerated physical activities, sexual activity, and sleeping in the same bed as their partner." so they weren't exercising. If you exercise, you stink, and if you don't, there's something wrong with you. Exercise is desirable, and if you exercise, washing is desirable. And if you are washing you don't stink. JayJay down there is also probably onto something.

I think there's definitely something to diet affecting body scent. For instance, people who consume lots of dairy smell loads different than people who are dairy-free. When I was vegan and ate high raw, I was told by my meat-eating husband that I smelled fresh and somewhat grassy. When I ate high dairy, I probably smelled a little of sour milk when I sweated. (Ew?) Who knows what I smell like now... human, I suppose.

It might actually be plausible that non-meat eaters would smell better to non-meat eaters and vice versa, but I agree cramped quarters won't work either way.

I doubt it. Apparently, Steve Jobs smelled terribly in his younger years, but refused to wash himself. I haven't washed myself for a long time and have asked lots of people if I smell. The all told me I don't.

Worthless study unless it was done on primal humans never indoctrinated with the "old spice" commercials and every other variety of commercialism to hide, cover up, and/or change the odors of a natural human animal. The women in the study were likely a portion of the masses brainwashed into associating ANY ODOR to be a negative, therefore the weaker odor won. Whose to say the stronger odor produced by a meat eater did not actually work to attract the opposite sex prior to such deceitful commercialism?

I agree with this. I do smell better than the rest of you. My shit doesn't stink either.

I will concede that my pleasant odor might simply be due to my choice of cologne - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLq2-uZd5LY

The stinky cramped van trips I endured in my younger years would say this is patently false.

Lol, I farted so much when I was a vegan. So body odor, aside, I don't think I was pleasant to be around. I had a sort of acrid odor when I was in ketosis but now that I eat a lot more carbs I smell great, my hair rarely gets greasy, and my underarms don't stink as quickly.

This not a scientific response - but - I often get people of both sexes, (though as a gay guy I prefer to hear it from guys!!) tell me I smell really nice. I have been sniffed around my neck so often I can't tell you - and I have hardly ever eaten wheat etc. Lots of meat / veg -and I am told I smell "floral"!!

I do bath daily - not once a week or anything - and have Epsom Salts in the bath - does that help??!!

I dunno. I shower twice a week, don't use store bought toiletries of any kind, so no perfume/scented stuff..only scent I have on my body at any time is coconut oil. People are always telling me I smell nice....But then again I am a natural redhead teehee!

Remember reading in a book on scents a while back that the best natural body odors were SouthEast Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Southern Indians -- contributing factors were high coconut content, fresh herbs and spices, high fish consumption (but lowered red meat consumption).
