Since going 100% paleo what have you noticed about your sex drive?

for me, fruit does make me feel better overall. If it has some effect on my (better since Paleo) SD, I don´t know. But a good handfull of Berries or so (thrown in Whipped Cream, Coconut Cream, Greek Yoghurt or so and slightly frozen, mmh..) as a last meal of the day makes me definitely a happier person :)

Getting my hormones checked before just led me down a rabbit's hole of confusing doctors. I really need to do something though because my hair falls out in clumps every time I wash it so I know "something" is not right. I got turned off of doctors so badly when trying to figure out my gluten issues that I really don't want to have to deal with all of that again. Plus, I live in Jackson, MS and there are not a lot of naturopathic options here :(

I added some more carbs into the mix and have noticed a marked increase in sex drive. Seems my Irish libedo runs off of 'Taters cooked in bacon fat.

Seems like I recall reading that he was quite the character - believed in really painful methods, including surgery, of reducing libido (but I am sorry I can't find my source). Just think - if he had been really successful - we wouldn't be here to read this!

I have always wondered about that aspect of PCOS. One of the characteristics of PCOS is abnormally high testosterone (for a female). Since I don't have it, I always wondered whether PCOS would at least be good for the sex drive. Sounds like in your case, at least, the answer might be Yes. Once your PCOS leveled off, the extra T went away, and so did your extra libido (I am only theorizing, not pronouncing). Graham crackers and cereals, to the best of my knowledge, were invented to kill everyone's sex drive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_cracker

You've only had sex 14 times in 14 months? Or is it 14 times as much as before? Just trying to get clarification :-)

If you don't understand what I mean with 'controlled' : I used to have this crazy fetishes that were quite ridiculous. After sexual action I suddenly felt so stupid. I felt like that fetish was a ridiculous thing to have and was deeply ashamed. Now I'm ashamed of it before I do sexual action, so I lost my fetish.

I know the guy who owns Finca Bella Vista, a dreamscape treehouse community, replete with ziplines, waterfalls, the whole gig. When he was first developing that place, he came back from his initial trip and had all kinds of new photos on his apple notebook and I looked at all of them. Pretty amazing place. Costa Rica is no joke.

But I ALMOST booked a trip and Tabacon was my top choice if I ever pull the trigger. Place looks like paradise.

Important to note that it's hormonally normal to have high sex drive during follicular phase (before ovulation) and low sex drive during luteal phase (after ovulation). That's just how the hormones roll!

Konrad - that was just his poor understanding of what was really going on. the real deal is that some of those saturated fats may very well have been making him perform poorly. he was getting lots of trans fats with all those fries. LOTS. Also, eating McDs constantly like will make anybody feel horrible. Just because he thought it was the saturated fat doesn't mean it was, but also, just because saturated fat wouldn't likely make him perform poorly, doesn't mean he wasn't performing poorly in reality. he probably was, but just confused about why.

Err, no idea "bullshit" would be offensive; sorry if that offended you, Namby. The problem I'm pointing to is that its so subjective that people end up believing in anything they feel like. Do you remember how the super size me guy said his intake of saturated fat made him perform poorly in this aspect?

I wanted to add a note on my wife's sex drive. (She has not gone paleo) I started paleo roughly a week after we got married. Since then I've lost about 15 lbs and my body comp has started to shift around a bit. She has, more traditionally, gained a few pounds. I've noticed her sex drive seems to have dropped off a bit in the last few months. I know she hates the way she looks, and feels bad about her current weight. I wonder: IF I could get her to actually go paleo and she thus lost weight, would her sex drive return?

I do wonder about mTOR's role. Culturally there is a lot of pressure put on sex. Perhaps we weren't as carnal as we think we were in Paleolithic times. After all this would emasculate our cave man image; in today's society who would want to admit that. A surplus of food and increased sex would explain a population boom at the dawn of agriculture.

What makes that approach work is the silliness of even asking and once you get over the embarrassment aspect of it it's actually quite a flattering thing to ask. And also quite honest. Honesty and the insecurity of not knowing whether he/she will say "yes" or "no" is a turn on in a lot of instances.

BTW... it never hurts to politely ask someone to have sex with you even if it is someone you're in a relationship with. A simple "Would you like to have sex with me?" will do. The worst that can happen is "no".

Did I say different? LOL Those sexual statistics are different women prior to 2004 and a different but single person entered the picture November 2004. Same woman since then; my wife. The secret is to learn how to become independently dependent on one another. Only then will free flowing sex burst like a Geyser *characterized by intermittent discharge of water ejected turbulently and accompanied by a vapour phase (steam) from the Earth's crust. *taken from wiki: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/Steam_Phase_eruption_of_Castle_geyser_with_double_rainbow.jpg

Do you remember how the super size me guy said his intake of saturated fat made him perform poorly in this aspect?

imagine your sex drive about a week postpartum, while youre using your drain snake to get hair out of the shower drain, and the phone starts ringing while the baby is screaming and its your husband telling you he just got busted for a DUI. thats about where my sex drive is.

ETA: ill take the time to note that my husband has never been bagged for a DUI. im using imagery to illustrate. everything else is totally true.

ETA take 2: seriously, i have two little kids and am under and extraordinary amount of stress due to aforementioned husbands very long term unemployment and working on my lil business every night until midnight. its pretty understandable that i just want to curl up and go into a coma whenever i get the chance. i ind that stress had a much more profound effect on libido than anything else for me.

I wonder if sex drive is a feast or famine phenomenon. Higher carbs = feast and therefore sex drive?

My sex drive has dramatically increased in the 4-months that I've been Paleo. I've always had a very healthy appetite for naked times but now? Holy hell, I'm literally frisky all the time. I've never had orgasm issues, normal usually one-per, but last week had three during a sexy times romp. Three! I say it???s definitely the Paleo diet/lifestyle. I truly feel zingy all the time since the switch, truly more alive and in-tune with myself and am happy to see I'm not the only one who is wanting to pounce all the time :) So glad that I found this thread and not be shy about the responding to it. Good, very good, and a healthy attitude towards sex, too. Although I can't be sure if it is lack of grains or more fats and micronutrients that improves things. I'm not really eating more meat than I did before I started focusing on my health, but it is grass-fed, that might matter.

I know that a no meat diet was DEATH in that department, so was a low fat diet. So would a very high protein diet, I think. What I'm doing works. I don't think most people emphasize nutrition and in fact their paleo diet puts them at risk of deficiencies because most people simply don't think about that. But our hormonal health is dependent upon nutrition.

Long-Term lower-carb paleo: Very healthy in that regard. I find myself thinking about "it" much more often, to the points of annoyance sometimes (I do have work and life outside the bedroom).

I tend to be most "ready" upon waking, morning and post-napping. Hence, I get to draw the conclusion that I have a natural "sundial".

My sex drive has never been very high and paleo hasn't changed that. If anything, it might be a bit lower these days than when I was eating the SAD. I was having some hormonal imbalance issues for quite a while before I went paleo, and those seem to be resolved now - I don't get ovarian cysts any more, my acne cleared up, my head hair is growing in thicker, I have less/finer body hair, my breasts went up a cup size even before I gained weight - all of that seems to indicate I have lower testosterone on a paleo-style diet.

I'm 26 (woman). I started eating paleo for health reasons, and it's helped me put about 10 lbs on my underweight frame.

I'm in a long-term relationship and we do it regularly, I never turn down sex and I enjoy it, but it's not a 'drive' or urge with me. When I go for a little while without sex, I forget all about it. I could probably be perfectly happy the rest of my life without being sexually active, as long as I was single (I don't see the point in being in a romantic relationship if you don't want to have sex with the person). Sex for me is mostly a bonding activity with my boyfriend. Don't get me wrong, it's great, I just don't need it.

Mine seems to have decreased a bit. I don't necessarily attribute this to the diet, however. I'm 30, and I've noticed that in the last year or so I've become much less hormonal. It's actually kind of a relief to no longer be such a randy chap. To the extent that going paleo factors in, I was much more LC in the beginning than I am now, and I've noticed a modest uptick of late. That said, at no point did I find my libido to be problematic. Even at its lowest point at the beginning of my paleo experience, it felt very natural and comfortable for both me and my fiance.

I am about to be 36 and my SD is pretty non-existent. I don't know if it's an age thing or what but I just don't "feel" like having sex pretty much ever. I eat meat, veggies, fruit, water. I have numerous anti-gluten symptoms so I avoid all grains. Is there something I can add to my diet to increase my libido? A pill I can take? It would be nice to have a happy medium.

Well now that so many answered I will chime in. This question was brought up by my wife over a nice bottle of wine. She was reading a few chapters of my book on spine surgery where she came across a few articles about diet and flexibility and sexuality and she posed the question to me, did I think paleo had changed me in this manner. I responded yes and I thought she would be the best feedback for my answer. She told me that it was the second greatest change in our lives over the last five years only made second by my change in thinking. After talking with her and a few friends I thought about asking it here to see if what we have experienced is N-1 or is it part of the lifestyle trend we might expect to see when we speak to other couples about how we live. I think your responses have been very enlightening. Thanks to all who shared their experiences!

I was strict Paleo for about six weeks, and now I would say that I've been 95% for another six. Before that, I was probably 80% compliant for several months, and before THAT I was a vegetarian for 18 years. I would say my sex drive now is lower than it's ever been (not counting the time I was taking Prozac or Effexor, both of which were disasters). Strangely, my husband also seems to have had a decrease in sex drive since we started Paleo - we used to have sex at least once a week, and now I'd say it's about every three weeks. (Fortunately, we're going to Hawaii next week, so I hope things will be a little different there.)

I don't know what might have caused this change. Is it because we've gotten used to being married and it doesn't seem that exciting anymore? Is it because I hate my job and have a long commute, and now I have to add cooking meat (which is a new experience for me) on top of a weekly CrossFit schedule? Is it a hormonal result? Is it bitterness because I don't get to eat "delicious" junk food that I used to eat? I'm not too surprised that my drive has been low, but I am surprised that my husband hasn't been inconvenienced by it. I've lost 40 pounds and went from a 14 to a 4/6...I thought we would want more sex, but we've been having less. He tells me I look great, but neither of us seem inclined to do anything about it.

Oh well. I think it's more psychological than diet-related, but we'll keep working on it (until he leaves for Afghanistan in three weeks, but that's a different story). It's interesting that there has been such a wide spread of responses to this thread.

Mine increased but it seems to be controlled : I don't feel the urge, but I'm still potent :D. I've only been a week on strict paleo though.

As a 33 year old woman with PCOS I find that since going VLC/ZC my sex drive has nearly disappeared whereas previously I had the sex drive of a 17 year old boy. I'm sure it's a matter of my hormones stabilizing but I'm not really loving this extreme drop in libido. Unfortunately I seem to lose weight better and feel better overall by eating VLC/ZC so it's not really an option to jack up the carbs.

The funny thing is I remember learning in college that graham crackers and cereals were invented to kill a woman's sex drive. I always assumed carbs were the culprit behind that but now I'm not so sure.

No change - 1 to 2 hours of deliciously slow sex every other day* - though I think it's too soon to tell for us, we've only been doing primal thing a couple of months.

Since I've been VLC I really haven't had much of a sex drive. I'm interested in the "feast" and "famine" idea expressed in other comments. Although, I noticed that my stamina has increased, when I do partake.

Mine seems to have dropped off a bit. Maybe I need to add more carbs into my personal mix? Timing is a big issue for my wife and I as well: I prefer it early first thing when I wake up, where as she prefers sex late at night. I don't like late at night because I wake up at 4:30 - 5:00 am, and she doesn't like when I wake up because she likes to sleep.

I can't wait until I leave my current job and free up my evenings...

Mine is through the roof. Seriously...I was so worried about the daily morning pup-tent that I asked my doctor if there could be something wrong.

Could be, I suppose, the 45 lbs that I lost. Whatever it is, I am not changing a thing!

BTW, I am a 43 y.o. male. I eat VLC Paleo, a little cheese.

I'm a male. When I was in my early 20's (SAD), I had sex 2-4 times a week (and significantly more for 9 months in the period I was 20-21). Now I'm 28. Sigh I only have sex 2-3 times a week. Normally, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Every morning I'm reminded just how strong my will to reproduce is and on nights/mornings when this drive is stronger I have quite vivid dreams.

In my 7th year of sex (27, and transition to Paleo), there was a slight decline, but that was due to the hormone suppressing effects of running 90-120 miles per week. A slight tweak in my training changed this.

There are 2-3 things I think make my drive stronger besides my curiosity:

5 raw chicken egg yolks (or 12-13 Quail egg yolks) in 100ml of cream twice a day (first thing in the morning and last thing before bed). Sometimes I add 100ml of milk as well.

2 small cups of coffee in the morning each one with 1 tablespoon of Great Lakes beef gelatin and 1 tablespoon of Spectrum expeller pressed virgin coconut oil.

Limit protein to < 100g per day sourced mostly from fatty pork.

[Optional:

Sex is fascinating. I think about it all the time, not in the traditional sense. I believe sex especially in humans is not given enough credit as the source of our behaviors (and not just the obvious sexual behaviors). We like to pretend that we are intelligent (and we are in a sense) and that we are in control of our behaviors and interests (but I don't think that complicated behavior is a accurate marker for measuring intelligence). I think sometimes, but not all times, our interests and behaviors and curiosity are a manifestation conflicts between our "biological brain" and intelligence seeking ways to reproduce. Lately, I've been playing with the idea that our intelligence might be driven by that conflict at least in part if not more.

Additionally, I do a lot of experimentation with chains and whips--just kidding--additionally I do a lot of experimentation with very simple things like facial hair, how I dress, what shoes I wear, etc. and pay close attention to the demographic of females I attract. In these instances of experimentation I'm looking for attraction but I don't engage. Fascinating.]

BTW... it never hurts to politely ask someone to have sex with you even if it is someone you're in a relationship with. A simple "Would you like to have sex with me?" will do. The worst that can happen is "no".

What makes that approach work is the silliness of even asking and once you get over the embarrassment aspect of it it's actually quite a flattering thing to ask. And also quite honest. Honesty and the insecurity of not knowing whether he/she will say "yes" or "no" is a turn on in a lot of instances.

Definitely higher since going Paleo. If I have a somewhat-higher carb day (maybe a potato and some wine), I can't get enough the next day. I'm not sure what the connection is, but my husband sure isn't complaining!

Yep. Lifting heavy stuff does it, but I also think the increased carbs with the lifting has helped me. Now, I have a little giddy-yap that I didn't have while lifting heavy but lower carb. I'm about to turn 35 and am randier than I have felt since I was in my mid 20s.

I've usually had the sex drive of a 17 year old boy but lately I'm more like AKD. It could be stress but if I take that out of the equation I'd say my libido has gone down. I'm curious if there is a disconnect between men and women in that dept on paleo.

It would be great if posters to this question mentioned if they are male/female/other. I'd find that helpful.

Not much difference. I guess I was healthy heading into the diet though so maybe I'm the wrong person to comment on it. I've always been a once-a-monther but I believe I inherited that trait from my father according to reports (that I never wished to here).

for me, fruit does make me feel better overall. If it has some effect on my (better since Paleo) SD, I don´t know. But a good handfull of Berries or so (thrown in Whipped Cream, Coconut Cream, Greek Yoghurt or so and slightly frozen, mmh..) as a last meal of the day makes me definitely a happier person :)

my sex drive is annoyingly high but it was the same when I was a starving vegan. going out in public makes my neck sore. I would love to have sex at least 2 or 3 times a day but that would take up way too much time.

I am in my 30's if that is important
