Japan makes meat out of poop... Burger, anyone?

Answered on September 12, 2014

I stumbled across this this morning and thought I'd share it. Scientists in Japan have found a way to synthesize human feces into meat. I wouldn't call this paleo, but it is kinda neat in a gross, eating your own poo sort of way.

Would you eat this? Anyone in Japan willing to give it a try?

Thank you. I have not believed this since the first time I saw it. Notice the "shitburger" label on the plastic baggie some of it is stored in. Don't you think they are just a little bit TOO serious? I dunno. Just doesn't seem real to me. I kept checking to see if I had stumbled on an "Onion" page.....

I somewhat agree. I would not go to Mars if it ment I had to eat my own poop after I got there.

Lol @ the hand-shaped pointer he uses while standing next to it: use your own hand? Anyway: pretty cool, but soy protein and as long as this freaky stuff is more expensive than real meat, I wouldn't even consider eating it!

I already know the secret of how to make meat out of poop.

  1. Take some poop.

  2. Compost the poop.

  3. Spread composted poop on grass.

  4. Let grass grow.

  5. Let cow eat grass.

  6. Cow = meat.

I also know how to make vegetables out of poop.

No, I would not eat this, and not just because of the ick factor.

The ???meat??? is 63% proteins, 25% carbohydrates, 3% lipids and 9% minerals. The researchers color the poop meat red with food coloring and enhance the flavor with soy protein. Initial tests have people saying it even tastes like beef.even tastes like beef.

Meat is not simply protein, fat, and carbs (and minerals). Besides, what kind of meat is 25% carb? Also, they had to add soy protein to it. No, thanks.

I find it amusing that they claim that one of the supposed benefits of this is "to counteract food shortages" and at the same time another benefit is that it has "fewer calories" than real meat. If there's a food shortage, you'd want your frankenproduct to have MORE calories, not fewer.

It is kind of awesome in a "how can we turn poison into food" thinking exercise. As far as practicality, it is at the very low end of reasonable. Food shortages are NOT from lack of food, they are from lack of transportation and distribution of food. All the effort going into these poo-burger factories doesn't address the issue. Food isn't made where it is eaten. So are you gonna have a mini poo-plant in each African village? Maybe we should tackle the simpler problem of getting clean water first. Or, I don't know, normal damn farming.

I appreciate the novelty, but aside from a long term space mission, I don't see the use. And even then, if we can't ship a few extra pounds of food to Mars with our first space pioneers, we don't have any business sending them in the first place.

This does not sound real. The comments after the video are hilarious. One person pointed out that the researcher's name Mitsuyuki Ikeda might be pronounced "meat-so-yucky".

I was thinking about it...

If I poop in a bag and send it to Japan for processing, does that count as donating food aid? Is this sh*t really tax-deductable?

I just thought of something though. Could this expand the carrying capacity of the earth? If we start eating poop, how many more people could be fed this stuff? It wouldn't be ideal, but if the choice was starve to death or eat a poo-burger, I think a lot of people would eventually eat the burger.
