Getting good meat in Ontario

Answered on January 21, 2015

Does anyone have any good suggestions for purchasing grass-fed meat in southern Ontario? I am from Hamilton, Ontario (not far from Toronto) and having a hard time finding good meat options. I am looking for grass-fed beef, pastured chicken, etc. I have gone to a nearby "Goodness Me" store and their options weren't great (lots of 'organic' meat but few options that were grass-fed). I am also looking for pastured butter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't mind a long drive as I have a deep freezer and can purchase in bulk.

Hey! So sorry for the delay but that's awesome to hear..the prices are definitely reasonable, I'm a student and I can afford it, I buy everything myself too. Definitely check it out, it's on the corner or Brock and Highway 2. I really don't think you'll be disappointed! Let me know how it goes :)

That's what I've found aswell. It took a lot of digging around to find the few options that I've found so far. That's why I thought I would post it on here to see if anyone has any further suggestions. It's sad to see that access to real food is so limited.

I would email or phone Healthy Butcher in Toronto and ask them for ideas. They source from all over and carry high quality meats - I made a bulk order of grassfed beef from them in December. They also carry bison, venison, elk, lamb etc. Great store.

I live in Oshawa but if you're ever around this area there's an amazing meat store. It's all grass fed beef, organic whole chickens, buffalo, salmon and lamb too. It's called Mennonite Meats. Let me know if you're interested!

I'm also from Hamilton (although I currently live in Toronto).

Eatwild has a decent list, but many of the meat sources listed there don't deliver (which was a problem for me), or are frankly more expensive than they should be.

You have one amazing resources at your fingertips in Hamilton: - The Hamilton Farmers Market! Go there, talk to the vendors and farmers. Find out how they raise their meat, and only buy from the ones whose practices you support. There's at least one source of pasture-raised eggs that also sells mennonite meat.

If you can't find anything good at the Farmers Market, then I'd suggest the following: 1. Google farmers markets from around Ontario. You can find some lists here: http://www.thegridto.com/life/food-drink/toronto-farmers-market-guide-2013/ and here: http://pinterest.com/blogto/toronto-farmers-markets/ 2. Go to the meat vendors' sites. Look into their animal husbandry methods. Most of the farmers who come to local markets raise their meat organically or on pasture. Many of these farmers offer meat CSA shares or sell cuts of meat/whole animals online. Pick one or two and try them out!

I have found the vendors at the Sorauren Farmers Market and the Dufferin Grove Farmers Market in Toronto to be among the best, by the way. :)

Gallery on the Farm (on twitter @organicbeefman) A Farm in Eniskillen the best organic beef around! A little farm from Hamilton, but it would be worth the drive for an order. No butter, just beef!

I have found some wonderful beef in Cambridge and I am about to try some pork in Wellington, but I am having a hard time finding chickens and eggs that are not grain-fed in Southern Ontario. Can anyone help me out with this please?

Cumbrae in Dundas is amazing. The prices are a little expensive but it's some of the best I've ever tasted. There's also a store in Toronto. They sell to alot of the best restaurants. http://www.cumbraes.com/

Quick Feeds in Copetown has a little freezer in their store. Jayne Quick raises her own cows and butchers them. They are grass fed and hay fed in the winter. Call ahead to make sure there is some in stock. Its not a grocery store by any means- a small animal feed place. The meat is tender and CHEAP $1.99/bs ground beef and $3.50 to $5.00/lb for steak.905-627-7171

Hi from Mississauga! We love the grass-fed (and finished) beef from Beretta Farms, near King City. They deliver on $200 orders and also have a retail outlet in Etobicoke. It's a bit pricey so we order almost exclusively from their monthly sale flyer. Their grass-fed ground beef tastes like roast beef to me. :) www.berettafamilyfarms.com

Black Angus Meats in Meaford, Ontario provides a whole host of wild, grass fed elk, wild boar, bison, buffalo, beef and venison. In addition, there is crocodile, alligator, muskox and caribou. There ribeye and free range chickens are particularly delicious. They also sell salmon, a host of raw cheeses, duck (and duck eggs), silkie eggs and chicken eggs along with turkey.

There is great meat all over Ontario but so little of it is accessible because it is not advertised. ie. The grass fed farmer down the road from me sells to industry because there isn't much awareness nor interest locally.

I'm also from Hamilton, and I buy from a farm in North Perth, Ontario. It's about a two-hour drive from here. The farmer is a bit of an activist, and will insist on giving you the farm tour, which I consider a bonus! I've bought a quarter cow from him in the past, and right now I'm working on half a pig. He doesn't sell individual cuts of meat. You must buy a half or quarter of the animal, and pick it up at the processing facility. I am not sure about posting his email address publicly like this. Is there a way to send a private message on this site?
