Artificial Citric Acid a problem? (for the chemistry-minded)

I intend to start taking magnesium citrate, but I read somewhere that most industrial citric acid is derived from corn sugar. However, not all the corn protein is supposed to be eliminated before refinement. I think the claim was that the corn protein is then hydrolized during the refinement, resulting in some free glutamate mixed with the final citric acid product. To make a long story short, since magnesium citrate is a salt of citric acid, I am wondering how much of this supposed industrial (impure) glutamate might be found among the magnesium citrate in a magnesium citrate supplement. And if it is found there, is a dose of glutamate found in 400 mg of magnesium citrate powder supplement something that could act with similar potency to consuming a small effective dose of MSG from a processed food? I understand this is a hard question, but even rough guesstimates would help.

Anything with "Citrate" in it could potentially have "free glutamic acid" since it is from citric acid, which is made from corn. I am unsure how much free glutamic acid it contains after hydrolysis. What I can say is that many "MSG sensitive" people have reactions to factory created citrates/citric acid.

I read a post at http://www.msgmyth.com where someone said they avoid MSG by using Magnesium Taurate, Magnesium Chloride, or Magnesium Malate. They claim these are "MSG" free but I personally haven't looked into these alternatives yet. I hope this helps.

Hard question indeed. Here's my out-of-the-box analysis:

Robb Wolf takes ~500mg Magnesium Citrate on a daily basis, and recommends it. (from book & blog) Robb Wolf is very sensitive to grain products and gluten, and generally gets immediate responses if eating the bad kind of foods. (shares stories on blog) Therefore, Magnesium Citrate is safe? (at the least for the same brand: Natural Vitality, Natural calm)

I know there's nothing scientific about this, but just thought I would share it.
