Attempted the Chipotle Paleo hack at lunch, just got bent over for $13.50 - any help?

Okay so I read up a bit on Chipotle, here in particular, and got excited to go grab some chipotle near my job. I got there, and did what people said they did in their case.

Order two meats. So I got carnitas and chicken. skipped the rice and beans and all the fixins, asked for Salsa Verde, Guac, and lettuce.

They get up to the register, ring me up, and nail me at a little under $13.50. I was incredibly taken back, and just walked out. Mostly because, other people on this site claimed to do the same thing I just did, and it actually working out CHEAPER than a usual bowl with all the fixings.

Anyone have experience with this or know how to get the price down? Chipotle is great for my paleo diet, I just cant absorb this kind of hit for lunch.

THanks!

The hack is to order for two orders of "extra meat" and a side of guac. You must ensure you do not get any other fixings. If you do that you can get double meat plus guac for around $6

@Katherine - there are plenty of fantastic "paleo friendly" starches. Rice is not one of them. It is the safest (only safe?) starch from a grain, however. Compared to a squash or sweet potato, however, rice is simply boring and nutrient light.

Why skipping the rice? I can't wait for the myth that paleo is starch-free to die.

They are not all company owned, Wisper.

Not a franchise (Chipotle the company owns the restaurants), but yeah, it's pretty irresponsible thing to do. You should have checked pricing first.

You just stuck the franchisee with your unpaid meal because you didn't ask about the cost before ordering your food? This increases the costs for every customer. When you order off-menu, it is caveat emptor.

If you order half steak half carnitas sometimes you get more than just ordering one and for the same price

The caution is sometimes you get less

The other hack is to say, that doesn't look like the amount I normally get, could you add a bit more?

Most times you get a little more at no additional cost

The rule of menu hacking is sometimes you loose and get stuck with a larger bill. Deal with it and don't walk out like a jerk.

======================EDIT=============================

So I read the post you looked at here: http://paleohacks.com/questions/20014/have-you-tried-the-ghetto-burrito-bowl-chipotle-menu-hack#axzz2JTaI8qLz

You screwed up by getting the salsa, guac, and lettuce. The hack is based around ordering two sides of meat and a side of guac and then getting the cashier to ring you up for two sides of meat ($1.50 each) and a side of guac. I cannot imagine a world where this would work, but apparently it does. You messed up the hack.

Mostly because, other people on this site claimed to do the same thing I just did, and it actually working out CHEAPER than a usual bowl with all the fixings.

I'm not sure where you heard that. There is a base price for a bowl, and double meat and guac are extra (i.e. there are no "deductions", and you aren't charged per topping). You also asked for two different meats, which may or may not count as "2x meat" -- it make count as literally two bowls. I've never paid $13.50. ... wait a sec, did you get chips?!

Here's the recipe for every possible paleo bowl at Chipotle:

  1. "May I have a salad bowl [to go or not].
  2. "No, no rice or beans, just fajita veggies."
  3. "May I get [insert choice of meat here]."
  4. < wait a beat / for them to have put one serving of meat on >
  5. "... actually could you make that double meat?"
  6. "Mild salsa, please. Lots. Yeah, even more." Optionally, get other salsas, too. Mild is the key, as it's basically chopped tomatoes and onions.
  7. < get dairy options if you do dairy >
  8. "May I get guac? Yes, I know it's extra."
  9. [If "to go"]: "May I get lettuce on top of the guac?" (this protect the guac from being stuck to the lid)

You are looking at $6.75 if they forget about the 2x meat and guac to about $10 if they remember everything.

If you get guac and they charge you for double meat it's like 12 bucks. Sometimes they charge you for double meat, sometimes they don't. It's not consistent, like once when I asked specifically for double meat I did NOT get charged, and once when I just did the sly (don't be hold back, put a little more on there), I DID. Meat's expensive, deal with it, I guess!

I haven't tried the paleo hack but when I used to get the chicken burrito bowl with guac it always costs me more than $10 so no surprise that the cost went up for double meat. Now if they had charged you for two bowls - that would be crazy! But I live in NY - so maybe chipotle costs more here?
