Second round of low carb flu?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Has anyone experienced a second bout with the icky low carb flu that most experience when starting the diet? Started eating paleo in September, felt like poo for a few days, then got over the hump and started feeling really good. But recently, I lowered my carbs to under 20/day. Now, either I just caught a bug somewhere, or I'm having a second fling with lower carb induced illness. Anyone have insight they can share?

It was one, as in not being able to rely on dual-metabolism. It's not necessarily the same thing.

Hi, Andy! If you changed one's to one I changed it back. It's "one's" as in "a person's" otherwise, thanks for cleaning up if it was something else.

Why did someone down-vote you? Must have been someone with brain fog. :-))

My best guess is that low carb flu will pass in a few days once your body adjusts to the low carbs. Good luck with the diet.

I wasn't really tracking before, but if I had to guess, I'd say between 50-100. Lots of veggies, coconut water on the regular, etc... However, I wanted to accelerate some fat loss, so I'm eating more eggs, fats, meats... and very few vegetables until I hit my desired fat levels.

Up your carb intake. Or eat more in general. I think that's what got rid of my brain fog.

AnnaA is probably right and you'll feel better soon. Many people on PH certainly do and they're very pleased.

BUT, not everyone adjusts easily to VLC. Going extremely low on either meat or carbs puts a lot of pressure on one's system and it may or may not be something to which you can comfortably adapt.

I tried on 2 different occasions and did not thrive at all. As soon as I returned to moderate carbs I was fine again so I guess it's just not for me. I've accepted that my best option is a slow-and-comfortable weight loss approach.

You can get the low carb flu again if you went back to higher carbs for a while, then go low carb again. And no, there's no specific number of days/months for this. Everyone varies. Some people don't get low carb flu again, or and a lot get a significantly shorter period.

I ate a few more carbs last night, and I started this morning off with a chefs salad as opposed to the bacon/eggs/zero carb breakfasts I've been eating as of late... and I already feel a bit better. Could be a combination of getting over the second low-carb flu symptoms, or upping my carbs to a point my body enjoys more. Not 100% sure... but hopefully time will tell!

I think you are in the ketosis zone now- how many carbs were you eating when you started?
