Question about Jack Kruse

Answered on August 19, 2014

Okay, I have read his blog, his leptin reset article and tons of other things about him. I have also listened to his TED presentation and his podcast.

So far, I understand everything that he said, but I can't comprehend anything he writes.

Like his formula:

Cell longevity = LS ??? IGF-1 + immunity X Food Quality X leakiness of Mitochondria X environmental cues

What is this all about? What is IGF - 1?

Well, I thought his speeches were impressive and his story, to put it mildly, is fascinating. However, when it comes to applying his ideas in practice this the only thing I got so far, and only from somebody's blog:

For 6-8 weeks follow a strict paleo

diet as follows: Eat 50g of protein

(little to no carbs) within 30 minutes of waking

Limit carbs to 50g a day

Eat 3 meals a day,

no snacking especially past 7:30pm

Meal timing should be roughly 6:30am, noon and 6:30pm

Stop all aerobic exercise

Could wonderful and supportive Paleohackers enlighten me on:

  1. What meal plan does J. Kruse recommends?

  2. 50 gr of protein - is it in protein grams or in metric grams?

  3. How many eggs per day?

  4. Eggs or oysters?

  5. Any sources of CONCRETE details in plain English?

  6. Anybody who implemented his ideas? Any feedback?

  7. What carbs does he recommend? What vegetables? Fruit? Starches?

  8. What about cold water? Will cold showers do?

  9. What does he recommend for lunch and dinner?

  10. He says that you need to keep it dark within 1 hour of sunset. What if you live in Alaska - do you need to walk in the dark?

Thank you!!!!!!!!

Happy New Year to all!

Mucho happiness to you!!!

Basically you want to eat more seafood, eat carbs seasonally and et your skin touching 50 degree water for, 30ish minutes at a time, possibly several times a day. I think I'm going to get back into this while it's still winter and my water is at 47 degrees.

But, if it's the winter and your tap water is 50-55 degrees then old showers might be alright. He makes the point that getting skin temp to around 50 degrees is ideal in bg6.

Okay, I can't find it now but I seem to recall him saying that he doesn't take ore recommend cold showers either on one of his blog posts or on his forum. I don't think he says they're bad, just that they don't do what ice baths do.

Jack says cold showers are fine but a cold water immersion works better than either cold air or a cold shower.

  1. Jack kruse recommends something he calls epi paleo with shellfish at the top, followed by regular fish followed by other meats, I think this is in his brain-gut 6.
  2. Protein grams
  3. He says that eggs can be a problem with the guts of people with autoimmune issues or a Compromised gut. I think egg yolks are a fine food though and ATM I'm eating a bunch, like 24, but I'm not Jack Kruse so take it with a grain of salt.
  4. Jack kruse would hands down pick oysters over eggs, he loves oysters, says they have everything he human brain needs to be optimal and talks about oysters and shellfish all the time. I think he recommends half a pound of shellfish per day in the morning in a forum post somewhere.
  5. http://www.jackkruse.com/getting-started-guide/ and http://www.jackkruse.com/the-quilthow-to-beat-agin/ are probably your best bets. He used to have a sheet where he explained the diet easy, but now your best bet will be brain gut 6 probably.
  6. I found him after taking cold showers, unfortunately he talks about mostly weight loss and I've always been more interested in weight gain. So aside from eating more seafood, specifically oysters I haven't experimented with much of his stuff. Though it makes since from a hormonal/brain/gut pov.
  7. Read this one http://www.jackkruse.com/brain-gut-6-epi-paleo-rx/ .
  8. He says no, I say yes.
  9. Refer to # 7.
  10. He says that the cold overrides part of the brain gut axis as it relates to light, so if you live in Alaska, it's cold and this will supersede the light process.

IMO he has gotten better at writing over time. Either that or he finally hired an editor for his blog. I actually really like some of the things he's been writing about seafood and the whole "epi-paleo" thing he's pushing.

Check out his protocols at the bottom of this page: http://www.jackkruse.com/getting-started-guide/

It's relatively straightforward.

There is like a thousand page thread about it on the mark's daily apple forum where people talk of experiences, and multiple others on this forum. If you search, I am sure you can find stuff.

Here are a few from this site.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/72955/in-a-nutshell-what-is-the-leptin-reset-protocol#axzz2BHUC0Twy http://paleohacks.com/questions/132344/protein-intake-gedgaudas-vs-kruse-leptin-rx#axzz2GdYBNZ6j http://paleohacks.com/questions/140382/the-leptin-reset#axzz2GdYBNZ6j

In the last one I posted this 'There's a lot of material about it here - http://jackkruse.com/the-leptin-rx-faqs/ and here http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/thread32345.html and a bit here http://www.marksdailyapple.com/dear-mark-leptin-resets-cold-thermogenesis-and-safe-starches/#axzz22VB6RVbx Plenty out there

IGF-1: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin-like_growth_factor_1

As for the rest of it, I really don't know. I'm interested in the whole "cold thermogenesis" thing, and I'd like to understand his "leptin reset" protocol, but despite repeated efforts I can't glean any useful information from his writing.

I agree that it would be nice to see some of this written down as a simple instruction sheet.

  1. He would say if you live in Alaska you would be one lucky person. All that cold, the seafood, the fresh air. Edited to add: his position has now changed slightly. The most important consideration is the amount of EMF and other radio pollution, and the ability to ground. For that, it is better to be away from oil fields, large cities, etc. Access to the ocean is most important.
