Do fermented soybeans have lectins?

I live in South East Asia, and I was wondering about the possible substitution of meat with tempeh from Indonesia. It is made from fermented soybeans. Does tempeh have lectins and is tempeh considered a healthy food in the paeleolithic diet?

Basically, I am only interested in the fermented form and would not ingest the non-fermented form of soy. And only include tempeh as variety once in awhile. Does anyone else on this site eat tempeh?

Another positive note on the John Robbin's website is the statement: 'phytate levels are reduced to about a third their initial level' when soy bean is fermented.

In Mark's Daily Apple, The issue of phytic acid in tempeh is still not resolved though, does fermentation of soy beans lower it by much? thus allowing nutrient absorption? On the other hand it is supposed to be good in aiding cancer prevention? I took a look further at the Vitasearch link and read one study showing that suggests that fermentation of soy bean increases availability of isoflavones in soy. This is sounding positive. Thanks for the answer and the links. Quite useful. The Paleo Weight Loss Coach dismisses tofu (and tempeh) as they are not on the Paeleo diet, which I am aware of. But I understood some time ago that tempeh (and other fermented soy products were more digestible such as miso and tamari sauce) and perhaps even beneficial.

Thanks Matt for your answer. Some of the health consequences are not so discernible in a short time, but rather, they accumulate over a longer duration. As of now, I do not partake non-fermented soy products, only the tempeh. But after doing all the reading...perhaps its just best to stop them altogether. I'll keep it modest as you suggest as I adapt the paeleo diet. Thanks.

This Mark Sisson article doesn't specify the lectin content, but does list tempeh as a vegetarian option.

The Paleo Weight Loss Coach says don't eat it.

John Robbins doesn't seem quite so concerned.

So, there's no universal agreement!

It's impossible avoid all lectins, everything has them. The goal should be to minimize them, if they produce negative health consequences for you. There is not one paleo diet, but multitudes of individual paleo diets. You have to adapt a paleo diet to what works for you in whatever conditions you are. If that happens to include modest amounts of soy, then so be it.
