GAPS question: How do you know if your gut needs healing?

I started the GAPS diet this morning and was talking about with a friend. He asked a great question: Everyone talks about healing the gut. How do you know if your gut needs healing?

While my friend and I have various medical issues, they aren't digestive problems. I know that Dr. McBride says that some people have leaky gut without constipation or diarrhea. Is there any way to know? Some kind of clinical test?

hahah, I actually edited out that bit because I wasn't 100% sure of the accuracy, so it appears out of context now. For the benefit of others, I think Robb said something about ingesting a certain protein or other substance and measuring the amount that comes out in the stool and urine and therby having an idea of gut permeability...

That's my assumption too, and that's why I'm doing it, but it's an assumption. If I start seeing changes, that'll be proof - for me at least.

I am interested too. I believe everyone living in industrialized countries needs to properly heal their gut, but I'd like to know what symptoms or tests can be done, and how to know your gut is healing and when it is fully healed.

The latest thought among the Robb Wolf/Mat Lalonde group is that any kind of autoimmune issues and/or metabolic syndrome related issues are ultimately related to dysbiosis/sepsis. That's a whole lot of symptomatic ground, but if your gut comprises at least 75% of your immune system, well, it's probably good policy to start your healing there.
