Never heard of that - I know sugar, and high carbs in the evening make it hard for me to sleep!

There was a question on here a while back about someone wondering why their kids were up all night peeing since starting paleo with the parents, perhaps this too much meat protein for kids thing could have some traction.

Got it - guess I read too fast before! We've got twins coming soon, so I'll be looking a lot more in to baby and kid nutrition very soon.

That's hilarious. And sad.

I will ask mine. In the meantime I've checked on the net and it seems to be because they say their kidneys are too immature to digest too much protein.

Thanks for your comments. Adults eat meat in the evenings. It's just that most or all pediatricians recommend children don't. They say children kidneys are too immature to digest too much protein, and since they already have it at lunch, they recommend to cut it in the evening.

The Germans have quite a few, what I would consider, cultural idiosyncrasies regarding diet and health. I've never heard this about eating meat in the evenings, though. I've traveled down to France quite a few times and the meat eaters in the evening seem just as numerous as anywhere else. Not really a fair take on my part, but just what I have observed.

You should ask the pediatricians why as I've never heard that before either.

The only thing I can thing of is that protein has a longer digestion time--maybe they think sleep interferes with digestion?

I feed my kid protein at every meal to keep her blood sugar and therefore mood stable. I can tell when she didn't eat it.

There have been a few times when a lot of protein seems to have been stimulating for me and kept me awake, but that was right before bed, not at dinner time with a few hours to digest it before lying down.

I have no idea if it is related, buy my host family in Germany wouldn't let us kids eat the Madarin oranges from our Christmas stockings in the evening because "the body doesn't need nourishment that close to bedtime, and the vitamins would be wasted". Maybe the same line of thought?

Not evolutionarily probable. In other words, it makes no sense.
