I know you're not doctors...but appendix or IBS or paleo question for the group...

About a week ago, I thought I pulled an Ab muscle ... Since then I've had some stomach upset in the morning, which I thought was my IBS creeping up due to my reintroduction to coffee, or my protein shake addiction.

I have an intermittent moderate pain in my right side, and it has done some radiating pain to my back rib cage.

Had a test for UTI, not that , doc thinks maybe kidney stone or early appendicitis.

If any of you have had appendicitis or stone experience can you share? I'm supposed to be leaving the country for vacation on Monday, and now I'm panicked that it will be delayed....

Can't get an ultrasound for a week....

If appendicitis is a possibility I want early treatment, but not too keen to sit in the emerg for 5 hours...

Thanks all.

If it's something possibly related to your appendix, don't mess around. My brother's burst when he was a kid, and it was the worst, he had to be in the hospital for a heck of a long time. Get a blood test to see if you are in infection-fighting-mode!

i don't know about appendicitis, but i have IBS and the right side under the rib cage, where the ascending colon turns into the transverse, is where i get all my spasm and pain, and it does radiate into my back.

Thanks everyone. I went to the ER to be sure last night, and all my WBC counts are normal. It's still there, but it's very mild. Hurts more when I'm up and moving.

Have an ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow.

If it's a cyst, then hopefully it will go away.

I've had cysts before, but they usually didn't last this long.

Maybe IBS, but it's different then when I've had that, and I'm having no problems in the bathroom dept.

Thanks!

My appendicitis was not the typical type. First, here's what the doctors expected: Very tender lower right abdomen, so tender that if they touched it, I would scream. Comes on fairly quickly, like about a day from "what's that weird feeling" to "this really sucks!".

Now, for me, it was a couple of days of growing pain, and general discomfort. When I finally broke down and went to the doctor, they thought that it sounded like it might be appendicitis, but they couldn't really tell. But they did a blood count and saw that I was fighting and infection and the pain was in the right place that it was most likely appendicitis, so they operated. They guessed right!

So I don't know what to tell you, but if you do suspect any appendicitis, I'd make sure you get it seriously looked at. From what I was told afterwards, that next to heart attacks, that's one thing they don't like to mess around with because it can turn deadly quickly.

Are you male or female? Because it sounds like an ovarian cyst to me - my exact symptoms and my GP diagnosed appendicitis until I had the ultrasound - which is the only way you'll know for sure.

My appendicitis started as sharp pain in the middle of my abdomen which later shifted to a duller pain in my right lower quadrant. It was tender and painful to the touch, and like Miked said, there is a lot of 'rebound' tenderness (pain that occurs after the area is touched and released).

I had pain for 3 days before going to the doc, who pressed the area, and immediately sent me for imaging after I nearly lept off of the table in pain! In imaging they were able to tell it was appendicitis, and I also had a high WBC count. For me, the pain did not radiate to the back.

However, when I had my gall bladder issues and subsequent removal (I've lost almost all my spare parts!) the pain was higher...upper right quadrant...much more painful and it radiated to my back. I just remember there being no position I could get into that relieved the pain.

I don't have IBS, so I can't compare it.

But I will echo what others have said...if appendicitis is suspected, you need to get it checked out. If it worsens and ruptures, then you're in a pretty serious situation.

Sounds like a spasm in the Psoas especially if you felt like you pulled something. I just had trouble with that. A couple of deep tissue massages and I'm all better. :)

Why did you have the UTI test? Do you feel pain with urination or increased frequency? When I had kidney stones, I felt CONSTANTLY like I had to pee, even when I just finished peeing. They tested me 5 times for UTI and completely overlooked the kidney stone possibility. However, I had no pain until the day I woke up with SEVERE pain- most of which was in my mid/lower back. It came on fast and strong. It wasn't like something lingering that I could tolerate.... though everyone is different. Ask your doctor if there was any blood in your urine when they did the UTI test (blood that isn't visible to the naked eye).. that can be an early sign of kidney stones. It's not 100% until you get a ct scan or ultrasound, but it may be a clue. I haven't had appendicitis but I'm an EMT and the few people I have seen with appendicitis have pain that comes on very quickly and is very intense. It is also in a very distinct location: starting around the belly button and then moving down and to the right. Appendicitis is very serious and can be life threatening so if there is any chance it could be that or your pain increases- don't wait until the last minute, seek help immediately.

Then again, IBS is certainly a possibility. Is it a pain you have ever felt before? If it is your appendix or kidney stones, it will probably not be. I would try and get it resolved before you take off anywhere far away. Nothing worse than being really sick while far away from home! Good luck!
