What does a day of VLC eating look like?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I'm looking for easy and simple meal inspirations. Not really for recipes, just a general guideline. How do you eat very low carb?

Also, will doing this put my body into ketosis, or is there some trick to doing that?

Thanks!

Be careful. Quite a lot of ladies find that VLC gives them hypothalamic amenhorrea - although it seems to be more common in women who are not significantly overweight. Keep an eye on your menstrual cycle/sex drive etc etc

Onions aren't good for ketotsis. In general, you want to stick with green leafy vegetables

I'm gonna go with Scratch, Chanda. As long as you're getting a decent balance of Omegas, technically, you don't need veggies. Sounds crazy, yes, but it's strongly possible.

Uh oh, I love onions! But my hubby hates them, so that's okay, I guess it will make him happy not to have onions in the food. What are MCTs? Thanks for the great answer!

If you eat whole animals (read: organs, skin and bones), then veggies are more optional.

Agreed! I can't even stand half n half in my coffee anymore. Gotta be heavy cream.(How on earth did the SHAD me put skim milk in there?! Eeeugh!) There isn't enough sugar via lactose in heavy cream to kick you out of ketosis.

Thank you! What exactly are the D3 and Magnesium supplements for? Will I be lacking in those, for some reason?

Sure. Go with the heavy cream. And while you are at it, make sure you eat organ meats, seafood and bone broth weekly so you don't miss out on any micronutrients. Don't forget D3 & Magnesium supplements.

You can use whatever fat you like, but I am a fan of the monounsaturated ones because they are the most heart healthy. As for the veggies, avocados, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, spinach... the list is endless.

What about coconut oil or ghee? Which non starchy vegetables have the most nutrients? I assume bone broth is okay?

Obviously meat and fats won't add carbs, so you have to worry about your veggies (ditch fruit). My preferred veggies that are also simple to make: broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, celery, brussel sprouts, kale/spinach.

Eating VLC COMBINED WITH MODERATE PROTEIN will put you into ketosis...it will take a few days to initiate, and a couple weeks to become fully adapted. If you eat too much protein, that will negate the effect. You want to keep your protein intake between .6g and 1g for every pound of lean body mass.

Just ditch all fruit and starchy veg. Eat only green veg and avoid -

onions beetroot tomatoes parnsips swede/rutabaga turnip celeraic squash

Adding some MCTs should help too

I used to eat VLC, I would usually eat

breakfast - beef patties and/or eggs blackberries with coconut milk and chopped mixed nuts

lunch - green baby-leaf salad with fish or meat

dinner - fish or meat with green veggies, eg. spinach, broccoli, cabbage, sprouts, courgette, asparagus, artichoke, kale etc

It got a little boring if I'm honest and not healthy for me (I'm female)

One more question:

If I were trying to get into a state of ketosis, would it be okay to have a couple of tablespoons a day of half and half or heavy cream in my coffee? I know dairy isn't Paleo, but I have to have my coffee with cream. I'd rather not give up my coffee altogether. And I have tried using coconut milk and also ghee in my coffee, neither of which taste very good to me.

Eat meat, fish, eggs and hard cheese and up to 500 grams of non starchy vegetables, preferably with olive oil.

You know, I like the great Vince Gironda's approach to low carb eating. STEAK AND EGGS!!!!!!!

It does seem crazy, but hey, if you're after a simple, low carb, keto meal... it certainly is the way to go :)
