Hello everyone.. i have a history of lyme disease and coinfections, i was on abx for long time etc.. Long story. I tried paleo and low carb diet last year I felt so much better physicaly but i was down mentaly. I was very anxious, depressed, i developed some kind of paranoia. I didnt have it before except anxiety sometimes. Im on antidepressants and Xanax for one month it doesnt help me much. So last week I decided to try paleo and low carb again and I feel like crap. More anxiety, depression, weird thoughts... Im afraid that Im totaly insane. Is it side effect of switching to ketosis? When I get better? Irony is that i feel so much better physicaly again. Thanks for your support

I second the magnesium. It makes a big difference in my mood. I vary between chelated magnesium pills, magnesium oil, taking a bath in epsom salts, and drinking Natural Calm (magnesium citrate). I also drink a lot of mineral water (Pellegrino is my favorite, and I can get a case at Costco).

It's very difficult to say how much is enough. People usually supplement in the range of 2-5g of sodium/day. Anecdotally, I feel that increasing my salt intake has helped with mental, physical and athletic performance (again together with eating enough). I use a salt that's 50% sodium, 40% potassium and 10% magnesium and magnesium pills.

Thanks for your reply. My mood is swinging very rapidly, Im very depressed in the morning and euphoric in the evening. Its very weird and exhausting. I eat one teaspoon of sea salt is that OK for sodium? how can i supplement potassium? Should I stay in ketosis and wait?

I don't see why you couldn't eat more carbs, unless you were specifically recommended low carb for your lyme disease. Is it possible that it was the paleo aspect of your diet rather than the low carb aspect that improved your ailments? What kind of diet were you on before?

Try eating a balanced diet with a wee bit more carbs such as starchy vegetables, sweet potatoes and fruit. Then see how you feel. Eating clean, whole foods is what's most important.

AND avoid calcium (works against magnesium) and caffeine. My ketosis anxiety state passes after about 36 hours but then again I've had plenty of experience.

@crazyman I know when I'm going into ketosis because I get a physical anxiety attack. By physical I mean my hands shake, I want to vomit and often vomit and I feel really shakey. Basically the same as before a really big exam or date if you've experienced that sort of anxiety. I also feel cold but sweat at the same time. You need to load up on mega doses of sodium, potassium and magnesium and drink a lot of water. Pissing purple on ketostick is a very very bad sign - you should be barely getting a result if you're probably hydrated. In fact, if your body is producing ketones in proper amounts, you should barely have any in your blood after a while in ketosis. Oh and eat A LOT. It helps with the anxiety. The moment it feels the worst, that's the moment it's passing and you might start feeling a bit manic and happy.

I have experienced the same thing with having anxiety attacks and manic depression after starting a ketogenic diet. What I've found out is that these attacks are much more likely to happen when I haven't eaten enough. Before I started logging my food intake I didn't realise how little I was actually eating as the ketogenic diet is very satiating. Now that I'm fully aware of my food intake I have so much more energy both mentally and physically. I can feel the effect of a too low food intake on a day to day basis so I'm very aware of always eating enough.

Additionally, you probably need to supplement with sodium, potassium and magnesium. Again from personal experience I feel that has helped on my overall well-being.
